LUTHER’S KARAIDOS AND SIMPSON’S KULISKY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
FOUR OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today the Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 7, 2002.  Luther College baseball player Jason Karaidos (Des Moines, IA/Hoover HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Simpson College softball player Amy Kulisky (Des Moines, IA/S.E. Polk HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Karaidos, a junior infielder, hit .769 and had an .833 on-base percentage in four games during the week.  He had 10 hits in 13 at bats with three doubles, a homerun and five walks as the Norse posted a 3-1 record.  He scored seven runs and drove in four including the game winner in a 3-2 victory over Simpson on Friday marking Luther’s first win over the Storm in 22 games.  Karaidos finished that game 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  In a doubleheader sweep of Loras, he had five hits in eight at bats including a double and homerun.  He drove in three and scored three times.

Kulisky, a junior pitcher, earns IIAC Female Athlete of the Week for the second time this year (March 17) after pitching her third career perfect game.  On Saturday against Dubuque, she struck out 13 batters and did not allow a base runner in Simpson’s 10-0 victory.  It was the fifth perfect game in Simpson history.  Kulisky also pitched 5.2 innings against Wartburg on Thursday but did not figure in the decision as Simpson lost 6-3 in 10 innings.  In that contest, she struck out nine while surrendering three runs and four hits.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.  Karaidos and Kulisky earned the honor for baseball and softball, respectively, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic achievements.

Men’s Golf:  Central College freshman Jeff Osby (West Des Moines, IA/Valley HS) finished first in the 80-golfer Knox Invitational with a round of 73 and followed that with a 148 (76-72) at the 36-hole Augustana Invitational where he finished tied for fourth (of 110 golfers).  Central won both tournaments as Osby finished as the school’s low scorer in both competitions.

Men’s Tennis:  Luther College junior Scott Rheinschmidt (Cedar Rapids, IA/Kennedy HS) posted a 5-1 record during the week including victories at number four singles and number one doubles against Wartburg and Simpson.  Rheinschmidt and partner Eric Guffy split matches at number two doubles, defeating Central and falling to Grinnell.

Men’s Track and Field:  Wartburg College senior Jason Huegel (New Hampton, IA/New Hampton HS) finished first in the javelin throw at the Central Invitational with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 193’-6”.  He won the event by nearly 30 feet as the second place finished recorded a throw of 163’-10 ¾”.
