DUBUQUE’S BOVAN AND LORAS’ MEYER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
FOUR OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 21, 2002.  University of Dubuque track performer DeAndre Bovan (Chicago, IL/South Shore HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Loras College track performer Katie Meyer (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Bovan, a freshman, automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump with a school record jump of 48’-6 ¾” at the Elmhurst Invitational.  His jump is currently the third longest in NCAA Division III this season.  In addition to his triple jump performance, Bovan finished fourth in the long jump (22’-2 ¾”) and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.07).

Meyer, a senior, finished first in the heptathlon at the Augustana Invitational and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark of 4,408, the fifth-best mark in NCAA Division III to date this season.  An All-American in the heptathlon last year, Meyer  ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.9 seconds, had a high jump mark of 4’-7 ¾”, a shot put mark of 34’-2 ¾”, a 200-meter time of 27.15 second, a long jump mark of 15’-11 ¾”, a javelin throw of 106’-11 ½” and an 800-meter time of 2:25.97.

The IIAC also announced the players of the week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.  Bovan and Meyer earned the recognition for track and field while the following individuals were recognized for their respective sports.

Baseball:  Buena Vista University freshman pitcher Dan Christensen (Sioux Rapids, IA/Sioux Central HS) posted a 2-0 record during the week with 15 strikeouts including a no-hitter against Central College.  He surrendered just two earned runs in 14 innings during the week against Central and Upper Iowa.

Softball:  Simpson College junior pitcher Amy Kulisky (Des Moines, IA/S.E. Polk HS) posted a 2-0 record during the week and did not surrender a run in 14.1 innings.  She struck out 28 batters during the week, including a career-high 15 in a one-hit shutout of Upper Iowa.

Men’s Golf:  Luther College junior Jordan Ryan (Victoria, MN/Chaska HS) finished the first weekend of the Conference Championship with a one stroke lead over four golfers.  Ryan shot a 145 (75-70) in the first 36-holes of the 72-hole tournament.

Men’s Tennis:  Wartburg College freshman Matt Connell (Eldora, IA/Eldora-New Providence HS) extended his singles winning streak to seven straight matches with victories at number six singles over Buena Vista and Simpson.  Connell and partner Vedran Solaja posted a 1-1 doubles record during the week with a victory over Buena Vista and loss to Simpson.
