UPPER IOWA’S GLASER AND WARTBURG’S BUTTRY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
FOUR OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 28, 2002.  Upper Iowa University baseball player Bobby Glaser (Stockton, CA/Stagg HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Wartburg College track performer Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA/Shenandoah HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Glaser, a junior outfielder, hit .625 in four games during the week with 10 hits in 16 at-bats.  In addition, he drove in six runs, scored five times and hit three homeruns (1.188 slugging percentage).  In a doubleheader sweep of the University of Dubuque, he went 7-for-8 with two homeruns, four runs scored and five RBI.  He also hit a homerun in the second game of a doubleheader against Central.  In that contest, Glaser was 1-for-3.  In the first game against Central, he singled twice in five at-bats.

Buttry, a freshman, finished second in the 5000-meters at the Drake Relays behind two-time Olympian Amy Rudolph.  Buttry set a school record with her run of 16:44.88, an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time that is currently the top time in Division III.  She broke her own school record by nearly 16 seconds.  Buttry also anchored Wartburg’s sprint medley relay team that finished fourth in a school record 4:02.95.

The IIAC also announced the players of the week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.  Glaser and Buttry earned the recognition for baseball and women’s track and field, respectively, while the following individuals were recognized for their athletic performances.

Men’s Golf:  Luther College junior Jordan Ryan (Victoria, MN/Chaska HS) finished tied for first in the Luther Invitational with a 4-under par 68 (34-34).  The Invitational was shortened from 36-holes to 18-holes due to inclement weather on Saturday.

Softball:  Central College junior pitcher Libby Hysell (Colfax, IA/Colfax-Mingo HS) posted a 2-0 record with 13 strikeouts in two games during the week.  She started both games of a doubleheader against Luther and did not allow a run.  In the first contest, she pitched a one-hit complete game, striking out 11 batters.  In the second game, Hysell pitched three innings, allowed one hit and struck out two.

Men’s Tennis:  Coe College sophomore Phil Williams (Cedar Rapids, IA/Jefferson HS) posted a perfect 5-0 record at the Iowa Conference tennis championship as Coe won its second consecutive team title.  Williams registered victories at number one singles against Loras’ Adam Ottaviano (6-0, 6-0) and Cornell’s Tim Preston (6-1, 6-0) and a victory at number three singles against Luther’s Marcin Niewiadomski (6-1, 6-3).  Along with partner Jeff White, he posted 8-1 victories over Loras (at number one) and Cornell (at number two) in doubles play.

Men’s Track and Field:  Wartburg College senior Jason Huegel (Ionia, IA/New Hampton HS) finished ninth in the javelin at the Drake Relays.  His throw of 195’-10” was the top mark among NCAA Division III athletes.
