FOUR OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 5, 2002.  Coe College tennis player Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, IA/Washington HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Central College softball player Libby Hysell (Colfax, IA/Colfax Mingo HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Barnes, a sophomore, won the Iowa Conference Individual title in flight A singles and doubles.  In singles action, he defeated Luther’s Scott Rheinschmidt (6-2, 6-3) and teammates Lucas Elliott (6-1, 6-2), Phil Williams (6-2, 6-4) and Nick Frank (6-3, 6-1) en route to the title.  Barnes was the top ranked player in flight A, Frank was ranked second and Williams third.  In doubles, Barnes teamed with Frank to repeat as flight A champions.  They defeated Luther’s Marcin Niewiadomski and Ryan Sommers (8-1), Coe’s Adam and Lucas Elliott (8-2) and Cornell’s Austin Reed and Scott Tolliver (9-7).  Barnes and Frank were the top seeded doubles team, Reed and Tolliver were ranked third.  Barnes was named IIAC Men’s Tennis Most Valuable Player.

Hysell, a junior, earned three victories against nationally ranked opponents in a 48-hour span.  She won both games of Wednesday’s doubleheader against #22 Simpson and defeated #24 Wartburg on Friday.  In the first game against Simpson, Hysell pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, striking out six in the 4-0 Dutch victory.  She started the second game of the doubleheader, pitching scoreless four innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.  She completed the week with a 12-strikout complete game in a 4-1 victory over Wartburg that helped Central clinched the Iowa Conference title.  For the week, Hysell pitched 18 innings, allowed one run (0.39 ERA) and struck out 21.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.  Barnes and Hysell earned the honor for tennis and softball, respectively, while the following student-athletes were recognized for their athletic performances.

Baseball:  Loras College senior outfielder Dave Swanson (Wheaton, IL/Benet Academy) hit .588 (10-for-17) during the week, driving in six runs and scoring seven in five games.  He registered four multi-hit games including a 3-for-4 performance against Coe with a triple, homerun and three RBI.  Swanson finished the week with two homeruns, a triple, a double and six stolen bases (in six attempts).

Golf:  Central College senior Tim White (Princeton, IL/Princeton HS) shot two rounds of 75 to earn Medalist honors and Conference MVP at the IIAC Golf Championship.  White finished the Tournament with a 296 (71-75-75-75), six strokes ahead of the second place finisher as Central won its second straight Conference golf title, 24th overall.

Men’s Track and Field:  University of Dubuque senior Bryan Kuehn (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol HS) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in one event and provisionally qualified in another with his performance at the Forest Rittgers Invitational.  He won the high jump with an AQ jump of 6’-10 ¾” and was a member of second place 4x100 relay team that provisionally qualified with a time of 41.88.  Both marks set school records.  Kuehn also finished second in the triple jump (44’-9 ½”).
