WARTBURGS SCHOONOVER NAMED
IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
May 12, 2002. Central
College track performer Peter
Wagner (Pleasant Hill, IA/SE Polk HS) was selected IIAC Male
Athlete of the Week and Wartburg College track performer Brianne
Schoonover (Fredericksburg, IA/Fredericksburg HS) was selected
IIAC Female Athlete of the Week. Wagner,
a senior, was named Conference Most Valuable Performer after his
performance at the IIAC Championship Meet.
At the Championship, he finished first in the high jump with
an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 6-7 and first in the
400-meter hurdles (54.61). In
addition, Wagner turned in a second place finish in the 110-meter
hurdles (15.26) and a third place finish in the pole vault (14-8
Ό). Schoonover,
a senior, was also named Conference Most Valuable Performer for her
performance at the IIAC Championship Meet.
She turned in four first place finishes in her four events
including the 200-meter dash (25.47) and the 400-meter dash (55.74).
Schoonover was also a member of the winning 4x100 relay team
(47.73) and the 4x400 relay team (3:58.16). The
IIAC also recognized the weeks top softball and baseball
performers. Coe College
freshman pitcher Amy Ernst (Monona,
IA/MFL MarMac HS) was recognized for her performance in the NCAA
Regional Softball Tournament and Cornell College junior catcher Ian Harden (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest HS) was recognized for his
performance at the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament. Ernst
appeared in three games for the Kohawks, posting a 2-1 record.
She surrendered just one run in 20 innings (0.35 ERA) against
St. Thomas (MN), Central and Wartburg including shutouts against the
latter two schools. She struck out 13 batters and surrendered just one walk. Harden
hit .563 in four games, including two in the rain shortened
Tournament. He had nine
hits in 16 at bats, scored four times and drove in three in a
non-conference doubleheader split with Grinnell and wins over Upper
Iowa and Wartburg in the IIAC Tournament.
Defensively, Harden was errorless in 26 chances and threw out
four-of-seven would-be base stealers. -30- |
