NINETEEN IIAC STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN
VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  Nineteen Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) student-athletes were named to four Verizon Academic All-District VII teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  CoSIDA announced the men’s and women’s Verizon Academic All-District VII At-Large Team on Thursday and announced the baseball and softball Teams late last week.

Six Iowa Conference student-athletes were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Women’s At-Large Team, comprised of student-athletes who participated in crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, field hockey, rifle, golf, lacrosse, tennis and water polo.  Buena Vista University swimmer Amy Brown (Storm Lake, IA/Storm Lake HS), and Cornell College tennis players Christy Hamilton (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa HS) and Ingrid Spiegel (LaPorte, IN/Providence Catholic (IL) HS) earned First Team honors and are placed on the national Verizon Academic All-America® Ballot.  Earning Second Team honors were Buena Vista University swimmer Sara Becker (Carroll, IA/Carroll HS), Loras College swimmer Meghan Hessling (Dubuque, IA/Senior HS) and Buena Vista University golfer Debbie Zorn (Lincoln, NE/East HS), the IIAC women’s golf MVP.

Three Iowa Conference student-athletes were named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Men’s At-Large First Team and will be placed on the national Verizon Academic All-America® Ballot.  Coe College tennis player Nick Barnes (Cedar Rapids, IA/Washington HS), the IIAC men’s tennis MVP, Loras College wrestler Paul Cleary (El Paso, IL/El Paso HS) and Central College golfer Jon Hietbrink (Pella, IA/Pella HS) all garnered recognition.

Six Iowa Conference baseball players earned Verizon Academic All-District VII recognition including three student-athletes on the First Team.  Conference MVP Nick Beard (Omaha, NE/Millard South HS) of Buena Vista University, Cornell College’s Brent Henry (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill HS) and Simpson College’s Tony Coppola (West Des Moines, IA/Dowling HS) each earned First Team honors and are placed on the national Verizon Academic All-America® Ballot.  Coe College’s Tim Vinyard (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa HS), Loras College’s Tim Cundiff (East Peoria, IL/Notre Dame HS) and Wartburg College’s Jude Burger (Dubuque, IA/Walhert HS) earned Second Team honors.

Four Iowa Conference softball players earned Verizon Academic All-District VII recognition including two student-athletes on the First Team.  Buena Vista University’s Jeni Rydberg (Schaller, IA/Schaller-Crestland HS) and Wartburg College’s Kathy Voss (New Liberty, IA/Durant HS) earned First Team honors and are placed on the national Verizon Academic All-America® Ballot.  Buena Vista University’s Katie Richardson (Storm Lake, IA/Storm Lake HS) and Coe College’s Shalyn Swartout (Sioux City, IA/North HS) earned Second Team honors.

To be eligible for selection to the Verizon Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

District VII includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
