August 2 , 2002 (Release courtesy of Paul Misner, SID, Buena Vista University) BUENA VISTAS ESPINOSA ELECTED
TO NCAA SAAC MANAGEMENT COUNCIL
STORM LAKE, IA . . . Buena Vista University senior Joshua Espinosa, from Bellevue, Neb., has also been elected to serve as one of the two Management Council representatives from the NCAA National Division III Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He was chosen in 2001 to represent the Iowa Conference for three years on the NCAA Division III Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Espinosa is one of 26 individuals selected to represent their conferences for the NCAA in Division III. Espinosa has been a three-year letterwinner on the Buena Vista University football team as a wide receiver. "I continue to be impressed with Josh and his ability to see the big picture and value of being in NCAA Division III. I know he is representing Buena Vista University very well and will do an awesome job with the Management Council," commented Bridget Belgiovine, NCAA's Associate Chief of Staff for Division III. A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to offer "I'm honored to have been selected and I'm looking forward to serving our input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses, conference and the NCAA well for the next three years," commented Espinosa. An Association-wide SAAC was adopted by legislation, approved at the 1989 NCAA Convention, and was formed primarily to review and offer student-athlete input on NCAA activities and proposed legislation that affected student-athlete welfare. The initial national committee was comprised of student-athletes from all membership divisions for the purpose of ensuring that the student-athlete voice was one that accounted for the myriad of educational and athletics experiences of both female and male student-athletes at all NCAA member institutions. Each national divisional committee is comprised of
both female and male student-athletes charged with the responsibility
of assisting in the formulation of NCAA legislation. The input of
the respective Divisions I, II and III SAACs continues to be sought
by a variety of constituencies within the Association. Student-athlete
committee members have the opportunity to speak with their respective
NCAA Management Councils, and the Divisions II and III SAACs continue
to speak to legislative issues on the NCAA Convention floor. National
