September 10, 2001 BUENA VISTA’S MARTINEZ AND
LUTHER’S PETTIGREW MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today
their Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the Conference’s
first two weeks of the 2001 fall sports season. Buena Vista University football player Carlos Martinez (Papillion, NE/Papillion La Vista HS) was selected
as the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Luther College soccer
player Katie Pettigrew
(Farmington, NM/Farmington HS) was selected as the IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week. Martinez,
a senior kicker, connected on all five of his field goal attempts in
Buena Vista’s 15-14 victory over Division II Southwest Minnesota
State on September 1. He
recorded the game winning field goal from 47-yards out with 6:24
remaining in the game. He
also connected from 45-yards, 49-yards, 29-yards and 46-yards.
Martinez is 39-61 on field goal attempts during his four-year
career with the Beavers. He
holds the schools record for career field goals made and ranks fifth
in NCAA Division III history. Pettigrew,
a freshman forward, recorded 17 points (5-7) in three games during
her first two weeks as a collegiate soccer player.
In Luther’s victory over Clarke on September 5, she
registered six assists, the second highest single game total in NCAA
Division III history. In
that contest she also scored three goals.
The
IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for each of their eight
fall sports. Martinez
and Pettigrew won the awards for their respective sports.

Cross Country:
Loras College’s Marcus
Murphy (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) finished second in the Luther
All-American on Saturday, September 8, in a time of 20:40.
He finished 0:07 behind Hameline’s Tom Kreger. Women’s
Cross Country:
Defending national champion Johanna
Olson (Wadena, MN/Wadena Deer Creek HS) of Luther College won
the Luther All-American on Saturday.
Her time of 18:16 was 0:42 ahead of the second place
finisher. Golf:
Simpson College sophomore Karen
Smith (Eagle Grove, IA/Eagle Grove HS) finished third in each of
the three matches she participated in.
Smith had four rounds of 84 or better (84-83-82-83). Men’s
Soccer: Cornell College senior
midfielder John Jakobsen
(Souix Falls, SD/Roosevelt HS) had five goals (one game winner) and
one assist in four games. Jakobsen
scored all three of Cornell’s goals in a 3-1 victory over Knox on
September 4. Women’s
Tennis: Loras College sophomore Katherine
Trevino (Ft. Dodge, IA/St. Edmonds HS) posted a combined 8-0
record through the first two weeks of the season.
She had a 2-0 record at number one singles, a 2-0 record at
number two singles and a 4-0 record at number one doubles (with Anna
Kramer). Volleyball:
Central College senior middle hitter Jaymie
Johnson (Johnstown, IA/Johnstown HS) finished the first two
weeks of the season with 44 kills, 106 attacks (.340 attack
percentage), 57 digs, 10 blocks and seven aces in 17 games. -30-
