BUENA VISTA’S MARTINEZ AND LUTHER’S PETTIGREW HONORED AS IIAC ATHLETE’S OF THE WEEK
SIX OTHERS HONORED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today their Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the Conference’s first two weeks of the 2001 fall sports season.  Buena Vista University football player Carlos Martinez (Papillion, NE/Papillion La Vista HS) was selected as the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Luther College soccer player Katie Pettigrew (Farmington, NM/Farmington HS) was selected as the IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Martinez, a senior kicker, connected on all five of his field goal attempts in Buena Vista’s 15-14 victory over Division II Southwest Minnesota State on September 1.  He recorded the game winning field goal from 47-yards out with 6:24 remaining in the game.  He also connected from 45-yards, 49-yards, 29-yards and 46-yards.  Martinez is 39-61 on field goal attempts during his four-year career with the Beavers.  He holds the schools record for career field goals made and ranks fifth in NCAA Division III history.

Pettigrew, a freshman forward, recorded 17 points (5-7) in three games during her first two weeks as a collegiate soccer player.  In Luther’s victory over Clarke on September 5, she registered six assists, the second highest single game total in NCAA Division III history.  In that contest she also scored three goals.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for each of their eight fall sports.  Martinez and Pettigrew won the awards for their respective sports.  Other IIAC Players of the Week include:
