CORNELL’S THIELMANN AND CENTRAL’S NIELSEN HONORED AS IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
SIX OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 30.  Cornell College soccer player Spencer Thielmann (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine HS) was selected as the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Central College volleyball player Angie Nielsen (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) was selected as the IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Nielsen, a senior setter, became the first player in IIAC history to record 5,000 career assists as she registered 259 assists in 21 games during the week.  Her 5,098 career assists ranks 12th on the NCAA Division III all-time list.  Nielsen averaged 12.3 assists per game and added 13 kills on 71 total attacks, 11 block assists and 62 digs as Central College defeated Luther (3-1) and won three of four matches at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational.

Thielmann, a junior midfielder, accounted for all of Cornell’s goals in a 4-3 overtime victory over Wartburg on Friday.  He scored the game winning goal on his sixth shot of the contest at the 99:57 mark of the game.  The four goals were Thielmann’s first of the season.

Also announced on Monday were the IIAC Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s eight fall sports.  Nielsen and Thielmann earned Player of the Week honors for their respective sports while the following student-athletes were honored in the other sports:

Men’s Cross Country:  Loras College sophomore Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, IA) finished 12th (of 471 runners) in the Augustana Invitational in a time of 25:14.  He finished 0:18 seconds behind the race’s winner despite being given wrong directions while leading the race and running 200 meters out of his way.

Women’s Cross Country:  Wartburg College freshman Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA) finished third in the Brissman Lundeen Invitational with a personal-best time of 17:52 (0:19 seconds behind the race’s winner).  Her time is the second best in Wartburg College history.  In three races, Buttry has two of the top-five times in school history.

Football:  Cornell College sophomore quarterback Chris Lovely (Pacific Junction, IA), ran for 163 yards and passed for another 108 yards in the Rams’ 16-14 victory over Simpson.  Behind his 225.8 yards of total offense per, Cornell is off to its first 4-0 start since 1992.

Golf:  Buena Vista University senior Debbie Zorn (Lincoln, NE) won the Beaver Classic by two strokes with a two-day score of 154.  Zorn shot 77 on both days of the tournament.
