RAMS’ LEAVENWORTH NAMED MVP, BURKE NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  Cornell College won the 2001 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday, October 13.  The Rams finished the two-day event with 81 points, six better than runner-up and defending Champion Luther.

Teams receive 10 points for winning a flight (# 1 singles, # 2 singles, etc.), nine points for finishing second in a flight, eight points for a third place finish, etc.  Cornell won the Championship with four first place finishes, a second place finish and four third place finishes.

Among the Rams’ champions were freshman Sarah Leavenworth (West Des Moines, IA/Valley HS) at number one singles, freshman Stacey Barth (Littleton, CO/Heritage HS) at number four singles, junior Ingrid Spiegel (LaPorte, IN/Providence Catholic HS) at number five singles and freshman Tara Alcazar (Greeley, CO/Greeley Central HS) at number six singles.  Leavenworth and freshman Stephanie Froehlich (Naperville, IL/Nevqua Valley HS) teamed up to finish second at number one doubles.

Cornell’s victory ended Luther’s 19-year run as the IIAC Women’s Tennis Champion.  The Conference began hosting a women’s tennis tournament in 1982 and the Norse had won every previous Championship.

Cornell head coach Fred Burke was named Conference Coach of the Year.  In his 21st year at Cornell he led the school to its first IIAC women’s tennis title after finishing fourth last season and second in 1999.  He was also honored as the IIAC Coach of the Year in 1998 when his team finished third.
