COE’S SCHARA AND CORNELL’S LEAVENWORTH NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
FIVE OTHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 14.  Coe College football player Scott Schara (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) was selected as the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Cornell College tennis player Sarah Leavenworth (West Des Moines, IA/Valley HS) was selected as the IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Leavenworth, a freshman, won the Iowa Conference Championship at number one singles and was runner-up at number one doubles with classmate Stephanie Froehlich (Naperville, IL/Nevqua Valley HS).  As the second seed at number one singles, Leavenworth upset top seed Katherine Trevino (Fort Dodge, IA/St. Edmonds HS) from Loras in the final (6-2, 6-3).

In the doubles final, top seeded Leavenworth and Froehlich were upset by Loras’ team of Trevino and Anna Kramer (Dubuque, IA/Walhert HS), the third seed (6-3, 7-5).  Behind Leavenworth, the IIAC MVP, the Rams’ won the IIAC Tennis Championship, ending Luther College’s 19-year run as Conference Champions.  It is Cornell’s first championship in any sport since joining the IIAC in 1997.

Schara, a senior kicker/punter, played an integral role in the Kohawks’ 10-6 victory over Wartburg.  He kicked the PAT on Coe’s second quarter touchdown that ended up as the game’s deciding point.  In addition, he connected on a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter and averaged 47.4 yards on seven punts.  Four of those seven punts pinned Wartburg inside their own 20-yard line and forced the Knights to start drives on their own 1-, 2- and 10-yard lines.

Also announced on Monday were the IIAC Players of the Week for the Conference’s seven fall sports competed during the past week.  There was not a women’s golf event scheduled during the week.  Leavenworth and Schara earned the honors for tennis and football respectively, while the following student-athletes were honored in other sports:

Men’s Cross Country:  Loras College sophomore Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) was named the IIAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the fourth time this year after finishing sixth in the Jim Drews Invitational in LaCrosse, WI.  His time of 25:31 was third among Division III runners in the 316 runner field.

Women’s Cross Country:  Simpson College senior Kate Olesen (Greenfield, IA/Greenfield HS) won her first career race at the Lamb-Kohawk Invitational hosted by Coe College.  In an 82 runner field, her time of 19:25 was six seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Men’s Soccer:  Loras College junior midfielder Brad Johnson (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) scored three goals in two games for the Duhawks.  He scored once in Loras’ 2-1 victory over Coe on Tuesday and twice in the team’s 5-3 victory over Benedictine on Friday.

Women’s Soccer:  Cornell College senior forward Julie Carne (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines HS) recorded four goals and 13 points in two games during the week.  She scored two goals and added two assists in the Rams’ 5-1 victory over Central on Saturday.  In Sunday’s 8-0 victory over Upper Iowa, she scored two goals and added three assists.
