UPPER IOWA’S MALAKI AND CENTRAL’S BRUNS NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 4, 2001.  Upper Iowa University football player Likaki Malaki (Los Angeles, CA/Susan Miller Dorsey HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Central College volleyball player Michelle Bruns (Waverly, IA/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Bruns, a junior middle hitter, led Central to its sixth consecutive IIAC volleyball title with 13 kills and four digs in the Tournament Championship match against Wartburg on Saturday.  In 12 games during the week (four matches), Bruns hit .371 (46 kills, 10 errors, 97 total attacks), had nine digs and 12 blocks (2 solo, 10 assisted).  She led the Dutch to victories over Coe, Luther and Wartburg in the IIAC Tournament as well as a victory in the regular season finale on Tuesday against Wartburg.  Bruns will now lead Central, the three-time defending National Champions, into the NCAA Tournament as the top seed in the Central Region.

Malaki, a junior linebacker, led Upper Iowa’s defense as the Peacocks ended their four-game losing streak with victory over Loras on Saturday.  Malaki registered nine tackles (five solo), had four tackles for losses and two sacks.  His two biggest defensive plays were a third quarter blocked PAT and a fourth quarter interception.  The blocked PAT preserved Upper Iowa’s 10-9 lead and his interception, late in the game, allowed the Peacocks to run out the clock en route to a 16-9 victory.
