CORNELL’S LOVELY AND LUTHER’S OLSON NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 11, 2001.  Cornell College football player Chris Lovely (Pacific Junction, IA/Glenwood HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Luther College cross country runner Johanna Olson (Wadena, MN/Wadena-Deer Creek HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week.

Olson won her second consecutive NCAA Central Regional title at Grinnell College on Saturday, finishing in 17:33, 19 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.  She led Luther to a third place finish at the Regional Meet and its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship Meet to be held on November 17 (11:00 AM CT), hosted by Augustana College at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, IL.

Lovely, a sophomore quarterback, led Cornell to 45-35 victory over Dubuque on Saturday.  Before leaving the game after three quarters with a 42-14 lead, Lovely carried the ball 21 times for 178 yards and three touchdowns (1, 11, 46).  He also completed six of 12 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns (75, 37).  On the season, Lovely led the Rams to a 7-3 record, the schools best finish since 1996.  He ran for 1,015 yards and 14 touchdowns while passing for 890 yards and eight touchdowns.

Also announced on Tuesday were the IIAC Players of the Week for four sports contested during the week.  Olson and Lovely earned the honor for their respective sports while the follow student-athletes were recognized in the other sports:

Men’s Cross Country:  Iowa Conference Champion Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) of Loras College finished third at the NCAA Central Regional Cross Country Meet at Grinnell College on Saturday.  Murphy finished eight seconds behind the race’s winner in a time of 25:21.  Murphy qualified for the National Meet on November 17 (noon CT).
