November 13, 2001 CORNELL’S LOVELY AND LUTHER’S
OLSON MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
November 11, 2001. Cornell
College football player Chris
Lovely (Pacific Junction, IA/Glenwood HS) was selected IIAC Male
Athlete of the Week and Luther College cross country runner Johanna
Olson (Wadena, MN/Wadena-Deer Creek HS) was selected IIAC Female
Athlete of the Week. Olson
won her second consecutive NCAA Central Regional title at Grinnell
College on Saturday, finishing in 17:33, 19 seconds ahead of the
second place finisher. She
led Luther to a third place finish at the Regional Meet and its
third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship Meet to be held on
November 17 (11:00 AM CT), hosted by Augustana College at the
Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, IL. Lovely,
a sophomore quarterback, led Cornell to 45-35 victory over Dubuque
on Saturday. Before
leaving the game after three quarters with a 42-14 lead, Lovely
carried the ball 21 times for 178 yards and three touchdowns (1, 11,
46). He also completed
six of 12 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns (75, 37).
On the season, Lovely led the Rams to a 7-3 record, the
schools best finish since 1996.
He ran for 1,015 yards and 14 touchdowns while passing for
890 yards and eight touchdowns. Also
announced on Tuesday were the IIAC Players of the Week for four
sports contested during the week. Olson and Lovely earned the honor for their respective sports
while the follow student-athletes were recognized in the other
sports: Men’s
Cross Country:
Iowa Conference Champion Marcus
Murphy (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny HS) of Loras College finished third at
the NCAA Central Regional Cross Country Meet at Grinnell College on
Saturday. Murphy
finished eight seconds behind the race’s winner in a time of
25:21. Murphy qualified
for the National Meet on November 17 (noon CT). Wrestling:
Wartburg College junior Brian Frost (Gilbertville, IA/Don Bosco HS) finished second in the
125-lb. weight class at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Open. His only defeat
in four matches at the Open came in the finals to Northern
Illinois’ Marlon Felton,
a Division I wrestler that was an NCAA national qualifier last
