November 15, 2001 162 STUDENT-ATHLETES RECOGNIZED MOUNT
VERNON, IA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its
All-Academic Team for the Fall 2001 season.
One hundred sixty-two student-athletes from the
Conference’s eight fall sports met the set requirements for
recognition. To be
eligible for All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must
participate at the varsity level, be a junior or senior in academic
standing and attain a 3.5 or better grade point average (on a 4.0
scale). “The
institutions in the Iowa Conference take tremendous pride in the
overall development of young men and women, this includes the
classroom as well as athletic competition,” IIAC Commissioner John
Cochrane said. “To
have this many student-athletes honored for their high academic
accomplishments speaks very highly of their dedication and
commitment to this philosophy.
The Iowa Conference commends these individuals for their
achievements in and out of the classroom and wishes them all the
best in their future endeavors.” The
2001 Fall All-Academic Team is comprised of 82 seniors and 80
juniors. Luther College
has a Conference-high 33 student-athletes on the Team followed by
Wartburg College (23 student-athletes), Buena Vista University (19
student-athletes), Central College (18 student-athletes) and Loras
College (18 student-athletes).
As
far as a breakdown of the All-Academic Team by sport, 36 football
players were received All-Academic recognition followed by
volleyball (29), women’s cross country (26) and women’s soccer
(20). Men’s soccer
and women’s tennis each had 15 student-athletes honored, men’s
cross country had 13 student-athletes and women’s golf had eight. Click
