LORAS’ DAVIS AND UPPER IOWA’S BORGEN NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BVU’S BEYER HONORED AS WEEK’S TOP MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 18, 2001.  Loras College basketball player Alicia Davis (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Upper Iowa University wrestler Jorge Borgen (Miami, FL/Miami Coral Park HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Davis, a sophomore center, was named the Most Valuable Player of the National Catholic Basketball Tournament hosted and won by Loras.  In the three games of the Tournament, Davis averaged 22 points per contest on 29-40 (.725) shooting from the field and 8-17 (.471) shooting from the free throw line.  She also grabbed 31 rebounds (13 offensive, 18 defensive, 10.3 rebounds/game) and added 11 blocked shots (3.7/game).

In the Championship game against St. Vincent College, Davis scored 29 points, grabbed 11 rebounds (8-3) and blocked five shots in 27 minutes.  Loras’ victory marked the first time in the 19-year history of the National Catholic Basketball Tournament that the Duhawks have won the Championship on either the men’s or women’s side.

Borgen, a 165-pound senior, finished first in his weight class at the Auggie Brute Adidas Open, hosted by Augsburg College.  He entered the Open ranked fifth in the 165-pound weight class and defeated the second ranked wrestler (Tony Abbott of Augsburg) in the finals by a 3-2 score.  En route to the Championship, Borgen received a first round bye then defeated Southwest State’s Brett Bartholomaus (3-1) in the second round and Jamestown College’s Lucas Lucier (5-1) in the third round.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s three winter sports contested during the week.  Davis and Borgen won the Award in their respective sports and Buena Vista University’s Robby Beyer (Monroe, IA/Prairie City-Monroe HS) was named Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

In his only game of the week, Beyer, a senior center, scored 19 points on 9-9 shooting from the field and 1-5 shooting from the free throw line.  He also grabbed 10 rebounds (four offensive and six defensive), had two assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the Beavers’ victory over Clarke.
