CORNELL’S FRY AND BUENA VISTA’S WOOD NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
SIMPSON’S HARRIS HONORED AS WEEK’S TOP MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 2, 2001.   Cornell College basketball player Lisa Fry (Warroad, MN/Warroad HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Buena Vista University wrestler Taylor Wood (Chariton, IA/Chariton HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Fry, a senior center/forward, averaged 20.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in three Cornell victories.  She shot 66.7 percent from the field (21-for-31) and 76.2 percent from the line (16-for-21) for the week.  In the Conference opener against Loras on Tuesday, she had a team-high 22 points off the bench on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor (2-for-5 on three-pointers) and 6-for-7 from the free throw line.  She also added six rebounds (five defensive) in the Rams’ 80-78 victory.  Fry earned All-Tournament honors at the Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Tournament over the weekend, scoring 39 points and grabbing 17 rebounds (seven offensive, 10 defensive) in two games.  Again coming off the bench due to injury, she shot 14-for-21 from the field (66.7 percent) and 10-for-14 from the line (71.4 percent) in victories over Iowa Wesleyan (69-47) and Hannibal-LaGrange (84-74), who was ranked 25th in NAIA Division I.

Wood, a 141-pound sophomore, posted a 5-0 record during the week with three falls and a technical fall.  In Wednesday’s dual meet against Dakota Wesleyan, he wrestled to a 7-1 decision over Justin Hood.  Wood then posted a perfect 4-0 record at the Terry Haws Duals on Saturday including three pins and a technical fall.  He pinned Minnesota State Moorhead’s Scott Larson at 0:53, Southwest State’s Keefer Jensen at 3:51 and Ridgewater College’s Travis Linsmeirer at 5:03.  Minnesota State Moorhead and Southwest State are both NCAA Division II institutions.  Wood also defeated Jamestown College’s Eric Grund by technical fall, 16-1.  On the season, Wood is 8-0 and has only surrendered six points (4 1-point escapes and 1 2-point takedown).

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s three winter sports.  Fry and Wood earned the Award in their respective sports and Simpson College’s Jesse Harris (Clive, IA/Valley HS) was named Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Harris led the Storm to a triple-overtime victory over Upper Iowa on Tuesday.  In 43 minutes, he scored 23 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field (1-for-3 on three-pointers) and 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  Harris also contributed nine rebounds (three offensive, six defensive), one assist, two steals and a blocked shot in Simpson’s 76-73 victory.
