LORAS’ DAVIS AND COE’S SWEETING NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
WARTBURG’S PIPHO HONORED AS WEEK’S TOP MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 9, 2001.  Loras College basketball player Alicia Davis (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Coe College wrestler Tony Sweeting (Riverside, IA/Highland Riverside HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Davis, a sophomore center, averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in two contests.  Against St. Mary’s University on Monday, she scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds (two offensive, six defensive) in Loras’ 73-58 loss.  Davis scored a career-high 30 points on 15-for-17 shooting in a 74-67 loss to the University of Dubuque on Saturday.  In that contest, she also grabbed 11 rebounds (six offensive, five defensive), had two assists, three steals and two blocked shots.  It was her fifth double-double of the season (in seven games).

Sweeting, a 141-pound junior, finished the week with a 5-0 record including three falls and two major decisions.  He opened the week with a major decision victory over Central College’s Danny Ebling, 9-0.  On Saturday, he captured the 141-pound Championship at the Dick Walker Invitational hosted by Wartburg College and was named the Invitational’s Most Valuable Wrestler.  He pinned Wartburg’s Cade Perrinjaquet at 1:41 and Augsburg College’s John Peterson at 1:12.  In his third match of the Dick Walker Invitational, Sweeting registered a major decision over Wartburg’s Eric Bantz (15-1) and then pinned Augsburg’s Jamell Tidwell at 0:50 of the Championship match.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s three winter sports.  Davis and Sweeting earned the Award in their respective sports and Wartburg College’s Mike Pipho (Denver, IA/Denver HS) was named IIAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Pipho, a junior forward, averaged 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game during the week.  Against Simpson on Friday, he scored 12 points (5-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line), grabbed four rebounds and added three assists.  The following evening against Central, Pipho scored 22 points (8-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the line), and grabbed 14 rebounds (six offensive, eight defensive).
