UPPER IOWA’S MEYERS HONORED AS WEEK’S TOP WRESTLER

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending, Sunday, December 16, 2001.  Upper Iowa University basketball player Arielle Beck (Moab, UT, Grand County HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Coe College basketball player Bruce Sain (Cedar Rapids, IA/Jefferson HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Beck, a senior guard/forward, scored 23 points in 22 minutes of Upper Iowa’s 96-43 victory over Grinnell College on Friday.  She scored 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting (4-for-5 on three pointers) in 14 first half minutes.  Beck, who finished the contest 9-for-14 from the field including 5-for-7 from three point land, grabbed eight rebounds (four offensive, four defensive) and had five steals.

Sain, a junior forward, scored a career-high 28 points in Coe’s 79-73 victory over Mount Mercy College on Saturday.  He shot 9-for-22 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the free throw line in 28 minutes.  Sain also matched his career-high with 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive) and added an assist and a steal.  On the season, he has led the Kohawks in scoring in five of nine contests and in rebounding in eight of nine contests.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s three winter sports.  Beck and Sain earned the Award in their respective sports and Upper Iowa’s Brent Meyers (Postville, IA/Postville HS) was named IIAC Wrestler of the Week.

Meyers, a 184-pound junior, won the Mike McCready Open with a 4-0 record.  He recorded a major decision over Augustana’s Chad Krnac (11-3), recorded a technical fall against Dubuque’s Trent Siver (19-4) and beat University of Chicago’s Bill Kopecky (8-7) en route to the Championship Match.  In the Championship Match, Meyers defeated Joel Schrimpf of Division II Minnesota State-Mankato (3-1).  Kopecky is ranked seventh in the nation in the 197-pound weight class but wrestled at 184 in the Mike McCready Open.  Schrimpf had been ranked as high as sixth nationally in Division II in the 174-pound weight class.
