May 15 Matt Scherbring, Wartburg, Jr., P
Pitched 17.1 innings, struck out 12, allowed just 10 hits and two runs in leading the top-seeded Knights to the Iowa Conference baseball Tournament title. In the opening game against sixth-seeded Dubuque, did not factor in the decision of the 3-2 loss but pitched 10 innings, allowed six hits and two runs while striking out five. In the Championship game, pitching on two days rest, threw 7.1 innings of four-hit shutout ball, struck out seven Simpson batters and walked just one in a 9-0 victory.
May 8 Chris Cyronek, Simpson, Jr., 3B
Hit .688 (11-for-16) with a double, six RBI and four runs scored in five games during the week. He went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored in a 16-8 victory over Grinnell. In the first game of a Conference doubleheader sweep of Dubuque that clinched the Storm a berth in the IIAC Tournament, went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Went 2-for-2 with an RBI and 3-for-4 with a run scored in regular season ending losses to Gustavus Adolphus (5-2, 8-5).
May 1 Austin DeHoogh, Central, Sr., CF/P
Hit .778 (7-for-9) during the week and pitched a complete game shutout as Central went 2-1 and extended its Conference winning streak to 10 straight. In a non-Conference loss to Morningside (13-9), went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the first game of a doubleheader against Buena Vista (6-2 win), went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and was the winning pitcher in the second game (9-0). Threw seven innings of eight hit ball and struck out two while walking just one.
April 24 Mike Soenen, Buena Vista, Sr., P/OF
Hit .750 (9-for-12) with two doubles, two triples, four RBI and eight runs scored in four games during the week. On the mound, went 1-0 with a save and a 2.25 ERA. Went 7-for-8 with two doubles, two triples, two RBI and five runs in a doubleheader sweep of Dubuque. Picked up the save in a 4-3 victory over Dubuque, pitching one inning of perfect relief. In the doubleheader against Simpson, went 1-for-2 in both games, scoring three times in the first game. Pitched a complete game four-hitter, striking out six and allowing just two earned runs in a 16-4 win over Simpson.
April 17 Steve Gebhart, Central, Sr., SS
Hit .600 (9-for-15) with five home runs, a double, 12 RBI and nine runs scored in four games during the week. Hit four home runs, drove in nine runs and scored seven times in a doubleheader sweep of Coe. In the 15-10 opener, went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three doubles. Tied a school record with three home runs in his 5-for-5 performance in the nightcap, a 16-5 victory. Drove in six runs and scored four times. Went 1-for-3 and scored once in both games of a doubleheader sweep of Simpson. In the first game, a 4-3 Dutch win, hit a home run and drove in three.
April 10 Joel Reynolds, Wartburg, Sr., 1B/OF
Hit .667 (8-of-12) with a home run, a double, six RBI and four runs scored in four games during the week. After starting the week with a 1-for-2 performance in a 7-3 win over Buena Vista, finished the week with three straight multi-hit games. Went 2-for-3 in the second game of the Buena Vista doubleheader (5-2 win). Went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the Knights’ 3-2 win over Coe and finished the doubleheader with a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI and a double in a losing effort (4-3 in 10 innings).
April 3 Brad Paulsrud, Luther, Sr., 1B/P
Hit .421 (8-for-19) with three doubles, a home run, six RBI and six runs scored in six games during the week. Also won his only appearance on the mound during the week. Offensively, had at least one hit in each game including two multi-hit contests (2-for-4 vs. Clarke and 2-for3 vs. St. Mary’s (Minn.)). Drove in at least one run and scored at least one run in five of six games including a two-RBI, two-run scored performance against Clarke. On the mound, struck out 10 batters, walked just two in a 5-3 win over Clarke.
March 27 Paul John Zobeck, Cornell, Sr., 1B
Hit .350 (7-for-20) in five games during the week with two doubles and three home runs, scored six runs and drove in 16.
March 20 Joe Hapanionek, Dubuque, Sr., 1B/P
Hit .514 (19-for-37) with five home runs, 18 RBI and 13 runs scored through 10 games. In the season opener against Concordia (Mich.) on February 28, went 4-for-4 with six RBI (in a 14-12 victory) and also went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI against Neumann on March 1 (10-2 victory). Went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in a 10-5 victory over Thiel on March 19. Also registered two saves in perfect innings of relief against Concordia and Neumann.
