Kyle Schroeder, Luther College, Sparta, Wis./Bangor
Schroeder, a senior catcher, led Luther to its first Iowa Conference Tournament title hitting .385 (5-for-13) with a home run, a double, four RBI, five walks and six runs scored in three games of the IIAC Tournament. In the opening game for the #2-seeded Norse, a 16-9 win over #3 Loras, Schroeder went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Despite being held hitless in three at-bats in a 10-6, 10-inning win over Wartburg, he reached base three times on walks (two intentional) and scored two runs. Schroeder then went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the Championship game, an 11-8 victory over Wartburg.
May 6
Brett Mahan, Central College, West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley
Mahan, a junior pitcher, pitched two complete game victories during the week, posting a 1.93 ERA, seven strikeouts and allowing 11 hits in 14 innings. In a 6-2 win over Buena Vista, he struck out four batters, allowed one earned run and six hits. Mahan slowed two earned runs and five hits, while striking out three in a 13-3 win over Wartburg.

Aaron Saeugling, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert
Saeugling, a junior pitcher/infielder, recorded his fourth consecutive complete game victory in Conference play with a three-hit shutout over Coe (6-0). Offensively, he hit .500 (4-for-8) with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and four walks in the three-game sweep of Coe. In the single nine-inning contest (a 4-1 win), Saeugling was 2-for-3 with a walk. He was held hitless in the first game of the doubleheader (a 13-3 win) but walked twice and scored both times. In addition to his complete game shutout in the nightcap, he went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored a run.

Kyle Schroeder, Luther College, Sparta, Wis./Bangor
Schroeder, a senior catcher, hit .533 (8-for-15) with two home runs, a double, 11 RBI and five runs scored in four games during the week. He began the week with a 4-for-5 performance, two home run performance in a 10-3 win over Dubuque in which he drove in five runs and scored three times. In Luther’s 15-5 win over Simpson in the single game of the three-game series, Schroeder was 3-for-5 with a double, four RBI and a run scored. After being held hitless in three at-bats in the opener of the Simpson doubleheader (a 7-4 Luther win), he went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored in the nightcap, leading the Norse to an 8-5 win.

Aaron Saeugling, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert
Saeugling, a junior pitcher/infielder, hit .538 (7-for-13) with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and five runs scored in four games during the week. He had three multi-hit games including a 3-for-5, four run scored performance in a 12-6 win over Buena Vista in which he had a double and drove in a run. He also had a pair of 2-for-3 performances – in a 3-1 loss to Simpson and a 5-2 loss to Buena Vista. Against Simpson he had a double and a triple as well as a run scored. On the mound, he went 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 13 innings. He threw a four-hit complete game in a 5-1 win over Simpson in which he struck out six. Saeugling received a no decision in a 3-1 win over Buena Vista, throwing six innings of shutout ball, striking out seven and allowing six hits. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Brett Mahan, Central College, West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley
Mahan, a junior pitcher, threw his first complete game of the season in Central’s 2-0 win over Simpson in game one of a doubleheader. He allowed struck out nine batters while allowing just two hits and one walk in seven innings.

Ryan Dupic, Buena Vista University, Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg
Dupic, a senior pitcher/first baseman, pitched eight shutout innings in Buena Vista’s 5-1 win over Simpson, surrendering six hits and striking out five while walking just one. Offensively, Dupic hit .300 including a 2-for-3 performance in a 5-4 loss to Bethany Lutheran and a 1-for-4 performance against Simpson.

Jake Shandri, Wartburg College, Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
Shandri, a senior first baseman, hit .684 (13-for-19) with four doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and nine runs scored in five games during the week. He had a 1.526 slugging percentage for the week and went 10-for-14 in a three-game sweep of Dubuque. In the first game against the Spartans, he was 3-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in the Knights’ 4-3 win. In the second game of the series, the opener of a doubleheader won by Wartburg (12-6), Shandri was 4-for-4 with three home runs, a double, seven RBI and four runs scored. In the nightcap, a 15-11 win, he was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Earlier in the week, he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as Wartburg was swept by St. Olaf (7-2, 5-4) in Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

Tad Barry, Cornell College, Charles City, Iowa/Charles City
Barry, a junior outfielder/pitcher, threw a complete game, three-hit shutout, striking out four in a 6-0 win over Eureka in the opener of a doubleheader. Offensively for the week, he hit .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in four games. He had matching 1-for-3 performances in the sweep of Eureka (6-0/7-0), scoring a run in both contests and driving in one in the first game. He followed that up with a pair of two hit games in a split with Bethany Lutheran (8-2/3-10), with a double and a run scored in each contest. He had a stolen base in the opener and an RBI in the nightcap.

Lee Boyse, Coe College, Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett
Boyse, a junior pitcher, went 2-0 with a 0.69 earned run average and 11 strikeouts in two games during the week. He pitched six innings in Coe’s 13-1 win over Clark (Mass.), striking out four and allowing one run and four hits. Boyse threw a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over #8-ranked Carthage. He struck out seven batters in seven innings and did not walk a batter. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Jake Shandri, Wartburg College, Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
Shandri, a senior first baseman, hit .643 (9-for-14) with six doubles, seven RBI, five runs scored and a 1.071 slugging percentage in Wartburg’s first four games of the season. He went 3-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s (Minn.) including 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in the opener, a 16-1 Wartburg win. In a doubleheader sweep of Wabash, he went 6-for-7 with five doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. In the opener (10-2), he was 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. In the nightcap, he went 5-for-5 with four doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Year)
