Jerrold Martijn, Wartburg College, Orangestad, Aruba/Kirkwood Community College
Martijn, a senior outfielder/pitcher, compiled a 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts to help lead Wartburg to the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament Championship. Martijn opened the Knights’ tournament run with a complete game 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts and seven walks in a 12-4 win over Buena Vista. Pitching on one day’s rest, he came back to pitch another complete game, striking out eight in an 8-4 elimination game win over Luther. In 13 at-bats in three games Saturday, Martijn had five hits, including a bunt single, two RBI, and five runs scored. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Nick Olberding, Loras College, Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman
Olberding, a senior shortstop, ran his hitting to 19 games while helping Loras to its first Iowa Conference title since 1952. Olberding hit safely in 20 of 22 Iowa Conference games and 30 of 37 games overall. He hit .600 with 12 hits, nine RBI, and three home runs as the Duhawks went 3-1. Olberding went the entire month of April without being hitless. He led the IIAC in hits, runs, RBI, and home runs. Olberding also recently broke the 11-year old Loras record for hits set by Justin Pierro in 1998.

Ryan Fincham, Cornell College, Englewood, Colo./Englewood
Fincham, a junior outfielder, hit. 611 with eight RBI, three doubles, and a home run as the Rams more than doubled their season win total with a 5-0 record during the week. He also hit a sacrifice fly, scored five times, and made 12 putouts in the field. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Pat Richmond, Coe College, Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown
Richmond, a junior first baseman, hit .750 in three games during the week with three extra base hits, seven RBI and a .950 slugging percentage. He was also perfect in five stolen base attempts and made only one error in 42 chances in the field as the Kohawks went 4-1. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Jesse Ramirez, University of Dubuque, Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe
Ramirez, a freshman catcher/outfielder, hit .611 with two home runs, 10 RBI, and two doubles in five games last week. He went 5-for-7 at the plate in a doubleheader split at Lawrence Tuesday before going 6-for-13 with two home runs as Dubuque went 2-1 in a weekend series at Central. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with the Dutch, Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and five RBI. He has had at least one hit in 15 of 21 games this season, including 10 multiple-hit efforts. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Kevin Kloewer, Buena Vista University, Omaha, Neb./Millard South
Kloewer, a sophomore catcher, turned in nine hits and a .600 average for the week, which included three doubles and three home runs. He also drove in 11 and scored seven times. Kloewer now leads both the team and IIAC in home runs with eight and is tied for second in doubles with nine. His 32 RBI for the year are now just three behind teammate Brandon Pietrzyk for both the team and conference lead. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Cory Dawson, Simpson College, Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk
Dawson, a senior designated hitter, hit .692 as Simpson went 2-1 in three games against defending conference champion Wartburg over the weekend. In the series, he registered nine hits in 13 at-bats with six RBI, four doubles, and three runs scored. In the March 29 doubleheader alone, Dawson was 7-of-8 with five RBI and three doubles.

Brandon Pietrzyk, Buena Vista University, Portland, Ore./Marshall
Pietrzyk, a junior outfielder/pitcher, finished the wee hitting .579, including five extra-base hits, to go along with 10 runs scored and eight RBI, to help lead Buena Vista to a perfect 5-0 record. Pietrzyk came into the week hitting .188 overall with only four hits and two RBI, and has since upped his average to .366. He also picked up his first win of the season on the mound during a key IIAC win over Dubuque Saturday, allowing two earned runs and striking out four over 5 2/3 innings. Jesse Reis, Simpson College, Coon Rapids, Iowa/Coon Rapids-Bayard
Reis, a senior infielder, hit .500 with 12 hits, 8 RBI, and 2 home runs as Simpson posted a 4-4 record last week. He hit safely in 7 of 8 games, but drew five walks in the lone game where he did not reach on a hit. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Patrick Grau, Wartburg College, Elkader, Iowa/Central
Grau, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher, led the Knights with a .628 slugging percentage, two home runs, and four multiple-RBI games as Wartburg split its first 12 games of the 2009 season. He also picked up the pitching victory in Wartburg’s 25-5 rout of RIT, allowing two unearned runs on one hit while striking out four in four innings of work. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
