2008 Golfers of the Week

May 4
Andy Petersen, Central College, Davenport, Iowa/West
Petersen, a junior, was named Iowa Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year for the second consecutive year after repeating as medalist at the IIAC Men’s Golf Championships. He fired back-to-back rounds of 75 at Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah to edge Buena Vista’s Josh Reed by one stroke. He finished the 63-hole tournament with a score of 37-79-75-75—266, leading the Dutch to a runner-up team finish. Petersen is the second Central golfer (Ron Peterson, 1981-82) and just the fourth golfer all-time (Bill Naughton, Buena Vista, 1985-86; Magnus Hellmark, Luther, 1995-97) to receive multiple IIAC Most Valuable Player honors in men’s golf. He is also a three-time All-IIAC selection after placing 10th as a freshman. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
April 27
Tom Lantzy, Luther College, St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North
Lantzy, a junior, is the clubhouse leader following the opening weekend of the 2008 Iowa Conference Men’s Golf Championships. He leads the field of 45 golfers by four strokes with a 3-over-par 111 (37-74), while the Norse sit in second place as a team (163-307—470) after 27 holes four shots off the pace. Lantzy was also Luther’s top finisher at the Gustavus Adolphus Bobby Krig Invitational, placing 11th of 80 golfers with a 13-over-par 225 (72-75-78). The Norse took third at Gustavus (300-301-310—911).
April 20
Joel Winters, Central College, Hampton, Iowa/Hampton-Dumont
Winters, a sophomore, led Central to a first-place finish in the 17-team Buena Vista Spring Invitational, defeating No. 10-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan. He took medalist honors with a score of 73-72—145, finishing one shot ahead of the runner-up.
April 13
Ian Flores, Wartburg College, Dysart, Iowa/Union Community
Flores, a junior, placed third in the medalist hunt at the Wartburg Spring Invitational. He carded a first-round 72 to share the 18-hole lead and followed it up with a 77 to finish with a 5-over-par 149, ten strokes off the lead. Flores, the highest finishing IIAC golfer at the meet, led the host Knights to a fourth-place finish (308-317=625). (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
April 6
Reid Turner, Central College, Des Moines, Iowa/Grandview Park Baptist
Turner, a senior, tied with two other golfers (including Buena Vista’s Tim Murphy) for second place at the Duhawk Spring Invitational. He shot rounds of 73 and 75 to finish in a tie for the lead at 4-over-par 148, but lost out on medalist honors due to a tiebreaker. Central won the tournament by 11 strokes over Illinois Wesleyan.
March 30
Justin Smool, Central College, Bagley, Iowa/Panorama
Smool, a sophomore, tied Central’s 36-hole tournament record en route to medalist honors at the Central Dutch Classic. He shot a 3-under-par 137 to best the field of 85 golfers by two strokes. Smool also participated in Central’s 291-315 dual loss to Grand Canyon University, firing an 84 to finish in eight place, 13 shots off the pace.
