Kurtis Brondyke, Central College, Clinton, Iowa/Clinton
Brondyke, a sophomore, recorded a career-high point total in the pentathlon at Friday’s Central Last Chance Pentathlon. He won the event with 3,590 points, an NCAA provisional total and the second-highest total in school history. The total is the fourth-best total in Division III this season, qualifying him for the NCAA Championships.

Eric Bertelsen, Buena Vista University, Polk City, Iowa/North Polk
Bertelsen, a senior, was named the Most Valuable Performer at the 2009 Iowa Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. He won five of the six events in which he was entered, setting Iowa Conference records in three. Bertelsen won the long jump with an IIAC-record and NCAA-automatic-qualifying leap of 25 feet, 2 ¾ inches, the 55-meter dash with an IIAC-record and NCAA-automatic-qualifying time of 6.36 seconds, the 200 with an IIAC-record time of 21.82 seconds, the 400 in 49.83, and ran on BVU’s winning 4x200 relay. He also ran on Buena Vista’s seventh-place 4x400 relay (3:33.43). (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Chris Buresh, Loras College, Naperville, Ill./St. Francis
Buresh, a senior, won the high jump and was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault with a runner-up finish at the UD Spartan Open Feb. 21. He cleared 6-5 ½ in the high jump and 15-3 in the pole vault.

Eric Bertelsen, Buena Vista University, Polk City, Iowa/North Polk
Bertelsen, a senior, extended his Division III-leading mark in the long jump with a 24 foot, 9 inch leap at the Dennis Young Classic. He broke his own school record for the third time this season and set a new meet record by better than two feet. He also set a meet record with a 6.48 clocking in the 55 dash, bettering the old mark by .12 seconds. He also won the 200 (22.07) and ran on the winning 4x200 relay (1:30.87).

Eric Patten, Simpson College, Webb, Iowa/Sioux Central
Patten, a junior, won the 800 meters at the Cornell Hilltop Invitational and also ran on the Storm’s winning 4x400 (3:27.71) and distance medley (10:41.86) relays.

Shawn Olorundami, Buena Vista University, Sioux City, Iowa/West
Olorundami, a senior, won the 55-meter hurdles at the Jan. 31 Buena Vista Open in an NCAA-automatic-qualifying and school-record time of 7.51 seconds. He finished second behind teammate Eric Bertelsen in the 200 (22.79) and finished sixth in the long jump (20-1 ½).

Bertelsen, a senior, won the long jump, 60-meter dash, and 200-meter dash at the USD Graphic Edge Open Jan. 24, all in school record fashion. He posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying effort with his winning jump of 24-0 ¾ in the long jump and an NCAA provisional-qualifying effort with his 6.94 clocking in the 60-meter preliminaries. Bertelsen won the 200 in a time of 22.18 seconds. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Zach Smith, Simpson College, St. Louis, Mo./CBC
Smith, a senior, won the long jump (22-3 ¼) and triple jump (45-5 ¾), ran on a runner-up sprint medley relay (3:42.47) and placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.12) at the Wartburg Relays Jan. 16. Smith’s effort in the triple jump was the second-best in school history.
