Gregg Wiersema, Univ. of Dubuque, Morrison, Ill./Morrison
Wiersema, a senior, was named Most Valuable Performer of the Iowa Conference Championship after scoring 31 of Dubuque’s 58 points in the meet. He won individual titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in times of 11.02 and 22.11 seconds, respectively. He ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x100 relay that provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a Carlson Stadium record time of 41.41 seconds. Wiersema also ran the anchor leg of the Spartans’ 4x400 relay team that finished eighth (3:27.01). (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Kyle Peters, Wartburg College, Shell Rock, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock
Peters, a sophomore, won the Iowa Conference decathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 6,106 points, besting the 11 athlete field by 66 points. He posted one of the top-three marks in six of the 10 events and a top-five mark in nine of the 10 events. Peters’ time of 15.66 seconds in the 110-hurdles and 11.2 seconds in the 100-meters, and his discus throw of 34.78 meters were tops among the 11 competitors. He posted the second-best mark in the pole vault (3.55 meters) and third-best marks in the high jump (1.88 meters, tied) and the javelin (45.22 meters). Peters 10.74 meters in the shot put was fourth, and marks of 5.99 meters in the long jump and 4:49.79 in the 1500-meters were fifth-best. He also finished sixth in the 400-meters (51.72 seconds). Guy Dierikx, Central College, Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale
Dierikx, a sophomore, was a member of three relay teams at the Drake Relays, two of which provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. He ran anchor on the 4x400 relay team that finished tops among Iowa colleges (fifth overall) in a PQ time of 3:13.65 after running the top time in the prelims (3:13.85). He ran the second leg of the 4x100 relay team that ran an NCAA PQ time of 41.41 in the prelims then ran 41.92 to finish fifth overall, tops among Iowa colleges. Dierikx also ran the second leg of the sixth-place distance medley relay team (10:15.73).

Patrick Johnson, Wartburg College, Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story
Johnson, a junior, won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the UW-LaCrosse Phil Esten Challenge with in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:11.19. He outdistanced the 13-runner field by nearly seven seconds, as the runner-up finished in 9:18.18.

Daunta Peterson, University of Dubuque, Tampa, Fla./Howard W. Blake
Peterson, a senior, qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Loras Mid-Week Invitational. He was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team that won the event and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 41.11 seconds. Peterson ran the second leg with a 9.97 split. He finished second in the 100-meter dash and provisionally qualified with a time of 10.80 seconds. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.29. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Guy Dierikx, Central College, Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale
Dierikx, a sophomore, won two events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in one at the Wartburg Select. He was a member of the provisionally qualifying 4x100 relay team that won the event in a time of 41.84. He also set a meet record with his first-place finish in the 400-meter dash (48.60).

Jeanriles Metezier, Univ. of Dubuque, Pompano Beach, Fla./Coconut Creek
Metezier, a freshman, won three events, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in one at the Coe Kohawk Open. He was a member of the NCAA qualifying 4x100 relay team that won the event in a time of 41.59 seconds. He also won the 100-meter (10.97 seconds) and 200-meter (22.00 seconds) dashes.

Jeanriles Metezier, Univ. of Dubuque, Pompano Beach, Fla./Coconut Creek
Metezier, a freshman, won three events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Wartburg Open. He finished first in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.82 and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team that ran a time of 41.78, provisionally qualifying in both events. Those were the only two male qualifying times in running events at the Open. He also won the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.16.
