Apr. 30
Christian Klein, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa/Minnetonka (Minn.)
Klein, a junior, won the Flight A singles title, finished third in Flight A doubles at the Conference Individual Tournament and led Luther to a second-place finish in the Team Tournament. As the #2-seed in the Individual Tournament, he defeated teammate Isaac White (7-6, 6-2) and a trio of Coe players, Jake Michael (6-0, 6-2), #4 Chris Paasch (6-3, 6-1) and defending Champion, #1 Ryan Yao (4-6, 7-5, 10-6) in the Championship match. He also defeated Yao (6-3, 6-2) at #1 singles in the Championship match of the Team Tournament. In doubles, Klein and partner Reid Mason, unseeded, defeated Central’s David Brondyke/Jared Feddersen (8-5), #3-seed Nick Cochrane/Ryan Dierks of Central (8-6) and #1-seed Paasch/Sam Zerbib (9-8) in the third-place match. Klein/Mason lost to eventual Champion Yao/Michael in the semifinals (8-1).

Christian Klein, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa/Minnetonka (Minn.)
Klein, a junior, went 4-0 during the week with a pair of victories at #1 singles and #2 doubles. In singles, he defeated Central’s Nick Cochrane (7-5, 6-0) and St. Ambrose’s Brent Hargrave (6-3, 6-3). Klein teamed with Reid Mason for an 8-2 doubles victory over Central and an 8-1 victory over St. Ambrose.

Nick Cochrane, Central College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge
Cochrane, a senior, went 3-1 during the week including two victories at #1 singles. He defeated Division II Truman State’s Tyler Wood (6-0, 6-3) and Simpson’s Martin Zivadinovic (6-1, 6-1). Cochrane and doubles partner Ryan Dierks split two matches at #1 doubles, an 8-5 win over Simpson and an 8-2 loss to Truman State.

Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley
Yao, a junior, went 3-0 during the week with wins at #1 singles, #1 doubles and #2 doubles. In singles, he defeated Central’s Nick Cochrane, the 25th-ranked player in the Central region (0-6, 7-5, 6-3). In doubles with Jake Michael, Yao had an 8-5 win over Central at #2 and an 8-3 win over Simpson at #1.

Nick Cochrane, Central College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge
Cochrane, a senior, went 3-1 during the week and extended his singles win streak to 11 straight matches. At #1 singles, Cochrane, the #25-ranked player in the Central region defeated the #22-ranked player William Holmes of Carleton (6-4, 2-6, 13-11) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Tim Eisele (6-1, 6-2). Cochrane and partner Ryan Dierks posted a #1-doubles win over Eau Claire (8-4) but fell to Carleton (8-6).

Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley
Yao, a junior, went 4-0 during the week including victories at #1 singles over Division I and regionally ranked opponents. He defeated Creighton’s Jose Guerra (7-5, 7-6) and Wabash’s Jay Horrey (6-0, 6-1), the 24th-ranked player in the Central Region. At #2 doubles with partner Jake Michael, Yao recorded an 8-4 win over Creighton and an 8-1 win over Wabash.

Nick Cochrane, Central College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge
Cochrane, a senior, went 6-0 on Central’s spring trip to Glendale, Ariz. and was the only Dutch player to go unbeaten during the week. He defeated Division II Mesa State’s David Smith and Ripon’s Paul Vanden Boogaard by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores at #1 singles. He also defeated Roger Williams’ Brad Bolte (6-1, 6-2) at #1 singles. At #1 doubles, Cochrane and partner Ryan Dierks posted wins over Mesa State (8-2), Ripon (8-3) and Roger Williams (9-8).

Chad Evans, Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy
Evans, a junior, went 12-1 during the week including a 7-0 singles mark and a 5-1 doubles mark. He defeated Jake Baranowski of Division I St. Peter’s (6-1, 6-2) at #2 singles and Scott Gregory of Division II Grand Valley State (6-1, 7-5) at #3 singles. Evans had a win at #1 singles against Waynesburg’s Matthew Otis (6-1, 7-5), at #2 singles against St. Francis (Ill.)’s Weston Streitz (6-0, 6-3) and at #3 singles against Wittenberg’s Brad Seymour (6-1, 6-0), Averett’s Niklas Karvonen (6-4, 6-0) and Christopher Newport’s Steven Inge (6-2, 6-2). In doubles, Evans and partner T.J. Leicht won at #2 against St. Francis (8-5), Averett (8-6) and St. Peter’s (8-4). They won at #3 doubles against Wittenberg (8-5) and Grand Valley State (8-1), and suffered their lone loss at #3 against Christopher Newport (8-2).

Christian Klein, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa/Minnetonka (Minn.)
Klein, a junior, went 3-0 during the week with a singles victory over a nationally ranked opponent and a Division II opponent. He posted a three-set victory at #2 singles over Adam Morgan of Gustavus Adolphus, the 30th-ranked player in the nation (4-6, 6-3, 10-7) and a two-set victory at #1 singles over Michael Belisle of Division II Minnesota State-Mankato (6-1, 6-2). Klein and doubles partner Reid Mason defeated Gustavus Adolphus’ Griffin Foley/Aaron Zenner at #3 doubles (8-6). Gustavus is ranked fourth in the nation as a team.

Feb. 26

Chris Paasch, Coe College, Atlantic, Iowa/Atlantic
Paasch, a senior, went 4-0 during the week with a singles victory at the #1 and #2 positions and two wins at #1 doubles. He posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #1 singles against Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Cory Dickert and a three-set victory over #10-ranked Wheaton (Ill.)’s Christian Dawes at #2 singles (2-6, 6-1, 6-2). In doubles with partner Sam Zerbib, he posted matching 8-6 wins over Oshkosh and Wheaton.

Feb. 19

Matt Leavenworth, Simpson College, West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley
Leavenworth, a sophomore, went 4-0 during the week with two victories at #1-singles and two at #1-doubles. In singles play, he defeated Buena Vista’s Khio Vongdeuane (6-0, 6-1) and Midland Lutheran’s Ethan Stout (6-3, 6-1). He teamed with Matt Johnson in doubles to post an 8-2 win over Buena Vista and an 8-6 win over Midland Lutheran.

Feb. 12

Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley
Yao, a junior, went 4-0 during the week with two victories at #1 singles and two victories at #3 doubles. He defeated the #19th-ranked player in the Central Region, Jordan Schiltz of Wisconsin-Whitewater (6-3, 7-6) and Monmouth (Ill.)’s Jared Kunkle (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, with partner Jake Michael, he posted an 8-1 victory over Monmouth and an 8-6 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater, the 13th-ranked team in the Central Region.

Feb. 5

Chris Paasch, Coe College, Atlantic, Iowa/Atlantic
Paasch, a senior, opened the season 6-0 with four victories at #1 doubles and two victories at #3 singles. His singles victories came against Nebraska Wesleyan’s Grant Johnson (6-1, 6-0) and #6-regional ranked University of Chicago’s Vivek Venkataraman (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). He teamed with doubles partner Sam Zerbib to post victories over Nebraska Wesleyan (8-3), Wartburg (8-0), Chicago (8-5) and Cornell (8-5).
