Feb. 19

Jacob Naig, Wartburg College, Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg
Naig, a sophomore, was named Dick Walker Outstanding Wrestler at the IIAC Championship after winning the 149-pound title as the third-seed. He went 3-0 with a technical fall and a major decision at the Championship. In the quarterfinals, he won by technical fall over #6-seed Andrew Sloan of Loras (16-0, 2:59). Naig defeated the #2-seed Kyle Forness of Buena Vista by major decision in the semifinals (10-2). In the Championship match, he won by decision over the defending Conference and national Champion, #1-seeded Matt Pyle of Luther (9-4). Pyle and Forness were ranked first and fourth nationally, respectively. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Feb. 12

Dave Paramski, Cornell College, Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville
Paramski, a freshman ranked eighth nationally at 141-pounds, pinned the sixth-ranked Niles Mercer of Coe at 6:48 in the teams’ dual meet tie (19-19).

Feb. 5

Cole Williams, Univ. of Dubuque, Delavan, Wis./Delavan Darien
Williams, a senior, placed third at 165-pounds at Dubuque’s “Moco” Mercer Open posting a 4-1 record with two falls and a technical fall. He pinned William Penn’s T.J. Stuart (3:38) and unattached wrestler Luis Coronel (4:12). Williams won by technical fall over Marquette’s Adam Crozier (19-4, 5:50) and by decision over unattached wrestler Braden McLoughlin (4-2). His lone loss was a 7-5 decision to Seth Garvin of Division I Wisconsin.

Matt Pyle, Luther College, Merrill, Kan./Sabetha
Pyle, a junior, went 4-0 at the Iowa Conference Duals with three falls and a technical fall. The top-ranked wrestler at 149-pounds, Pyle pinned Simpson’s Cole Christensen (4:15), Loras’ Drew Sloan (1:50) and Coe’s Jared Creason (4:47). He also won by technical fall over Buena Vista’s Kyle Kriz (16-0, 3:43).

Jan. 22

Jestin Hulegaard, Buena Vista University, Anoka, Minn./Anoka
Hulegaard, a sophomore, went 5-0 during the week with two major decisions and won the 133-pound class at the Northwestern (Iowa) Red Raider Invitational. In a Conference dual meet, he won by major decision over Cornell’s Aaron Bingham, 10-2. At the Red Raider Invitational, Hulegaard won by major decision over Dana’s Sonny Silva (11-3), and by decision over Morningside’s Chris Utesch (6-3), Wartburg’s Jake Helvey (13-9) and Augsburg’s Vanier Jafari (7-0).

Dustin Hinschberger, Wartburg College, Belle Plaine, Iowa/Belle Plaine
Hinschberger, a senior, was named Outstanding Wrestler at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals after posting a 3-0 record with two major decisions and two victories over ranked wrestlers. Hinschberger, the top-ranked wrestler in the 141-pound class, won major decisions over #8-ranked Travis Grawin of Luther (11-3), and Augsburg’s Josh Hansen (12-2). Hinschberger won by decision over #2-ranked Dustin Brewer of Simpson (5-2).

Jan. 8

Niles Mercer, Coe College, Keosauqua, Iowa/Van Buren
Mercer, a sophomore, won the 141-pound weight class at Cornell’s Matman Invitational and was named the Outstanding Wrestler. Mercer, unseeded, defeated the top three seeds en route to a 5-0 record with a fall and a major decision. He won by major decision over the #1-seed Zach Chambers of Wisconsin-Platteville (15-6) in the Championship match, won by decision over the #2-seed Earl Robinson of William Penn (6-3) and by decision over the #3-seed Ryan McMurray of Augustana, Ill. (5-3). Mercer also pinned Morningside’s Jake Thomas (1:25) and won by decision over Luther’s Logan Quek (8-6).

Jan. 1

John Ugaste, Cornell College, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich
Ugaste, a senior, went 7-0 during at the Citrus Open and Citrus Duals, capturing the 197-pound title at the Open where he defeated #2-ranked Dan Fiecke of St. John’s (Minn.) in the Championship bout (7-5). He won by decision over Heidelberg’s Ryan Fogliano (5-0) and Ursinus’ Kyle Carpella (10-5), and pinned Concordia (Wis.)’s Steve Urban (3:53) to lead Cornell to a third-place team finish. In the Duals, he defeated Heidelberg’s Tony Carothers (3-2) in a heavyweight match and Case Western Reserve’s Tom Sanders (9-3) at 197-pounds in addition to a forfeit win at 197 against Mount St. Joseph. Dec. 25

Tyler Hubbard, Wartburg College, Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs
Hubbard, a senior 125-pounder, went 3-0 at the Desert Duals with each victory coming against nationally ranked opponents. Hubbard pinned Elmhurst’s Tom Gagan, the #6-ranked wrestler in the weight class, and recorded decisions over the #3 and #4-ranked wrestlers, Ohio Northern’s Ty Klofta (4-1) and Johnson and Wales’ Brandon McDonough (7-5), respectively.

Dec. 11

Dustin Hinschberger, Wartburg College, Belle Plaine, Iowa/Belle Plaine
Hinschberger, a senior, won the 141-pound title at the Dick Walker Invitational posting a 4-0 record with a fall, technical fall and major decision. He pinned Coe’s Mitch Zmolek (3:15) in his first match then won by technical fall over Augsburg’s Taylor Rich (15-0, 5:00). In the semifinals, Hinschberger won by major decision over Cornell’s Dave Paramaski (15-4) before defeating Iowa Central’s Joe Soto (7-1) in the Championship match.

Zach McKray, Wartburg College, Iowa City, Iowa/City
McKray, a freshman, posted a 5-0 record during the week with two falls and won the 133-pound weight class at the Simpson Invitational. He defeated Brandon Young, 17-6, in a dual victory over Loras as Wartburg extended their Conference dual win streak to 97 straight. At the Simpson Invitational, McKray pinned Division II Truman State’s Dave Sielert at 2:30 and Coe’s Brian Clement at 1:30. He also had a major decision over Division II Central Missouri State’s Keaton Baker (11-1) and a 5-2 decision in the championship match over Central Missouri State’s Mike Hansen, the #3-ranked wrestler in Division II.

Nov. 20
Blake Gillis, Wartburg College, Spencer, Iowa/Spencer
Gillis, a junior heavyweight, finished third at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Kauffman-Brand Open. He went 4-1 at the Open with a pin and a major decision. His only loss, in the semifinals, came against three-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Les Sigman of UNO (7-0). For the second week in a row, Gillis defeated two-time defending Division III national champion Ryan Allen of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (3-1). Gillis other wins were by pin of Dana’s Pablo Montoya (at 3:18), by major decision over Division II Minnesota State-Mankato’s Tim Kraemer (10-1), and by decision over Division II Nebraska Kearney’s Tervel Dlagney (5-4).

Nov. 13
Cole Williams, University of Dubuque, Delavan, Wis./Delavan Darien
Williams, a junior, finished second in the 165-pound weight class at the Fourth Annual Spartan Open hosted by Dubuque. He went 3-1 at the tournament including a pin of Loras’ J.P. Williams in the second period, a 7-3 decision over Iowa’s Oleg Polyetsky and a 3-1 sudden victory win over Iowa’s Eric Luedke in the semifinals. In the Championship match, Williams lost a 3-2 decision to Iowa’s Cole Pape.
