Wernimont, a senior 157-pounder, increased his personal winning streak to 76 matches and his season record 40-0 with three bonus-point wins at the 2009 Iowa Conference Wrestling Championships. He was named the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler after pinning Dubuque’s Nathan Harm and Cornell’s Aron Kindelsperger in preliminary rounds and posting a 16-5 major decision over Loras’ Erik Hanson in the 157-pound championship match. Kevin Donahue, Cornell College, Mechanicsville, Va./St. Christopher’s
Donahue, a sophomore 141-pounder, recorded a first-period pin over Coe’s 10th-ranked Johny Siegel. He also defeated Jacob Mirocha of Wartburg by a 18-8 major decision.

Clayton Rush, Coe College, Aledo, Ill./Aledo
Rush, a sophomore 125-pounder, improved his record to 19-1 on the year and 55-6 for his career with a pair of wins last week. He posted a 20-4 technical fall over Luther’s Zach Elliot before downing Chris Scheetz of Delaware Valley by a 6-3 margin. Scheetz entered the match rated fourth in NCAA Division III. John Helgerson, Wartburg College, West Union, Iowa/North Fayette
Helgerson, a sophomore heavyweight, went 3-0 at the Dubuque section of the IIAC Duals Jan. 24, helping the program extend their dual winning streak against IIAC foes to 130. He avenged an earlier loss to No. 5-ranked Mitch Sander of Coe with a 4-2 decision.

Evan Brown, University of Dubuque, Nevada, Iowa/Nevada
Brown, a junior 174-pounder, upset No. 9-ranked Kyle Kehrli of Cornell, 3-1, in a Jan. 16 dual meet. The decision was part of a 24-16 win by the 25th-ranked Spartans over the 10th-ranked Rams. Brown is just the second Division III wrestler to beat Kehrli this season.

Clayton Rush, Coe College, Aledo, Ill./Aledo
Rush, a sophomore 125-pounder, improved to 8-0 for his career at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a 4-0 performance Jan. 10-11. With two major decisions as well as decisions over the No. 5 and No. 7 wrestlers in Division III, he led the Kohawks to a fourth-place finish, their highest-ever finish at the duals.

Alec Bonander, Luther College, Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon
Bonander, a senior 197-pounder, posted a 4-2 record at the Midlands Championships, failing to place by one match. Following an opening round pin-fall loss to Hudson Taylor of Maryland, he rattled off four consecutive wins in the wrestlebacks, including a major decision over Tyler Dickenson of Michigan State (10-2) and a win by fall over Chad Hanke of Oregon State, before falling to Iowa State’s Kyle Simonson by a 6-4 margin. Bonander is now 10-2 overall and the top-ranked wrestler in Division III at 197 pounds. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Rob Kramer, Coe College, Swisher, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie
Kramer, a junior 197-pounder, went undefeated at the Wartburg Desert Duals, helping the Kohawks go undefeated at the event for the third consecutive year. He posted a technical fall over Ohio Northern’s Drew Michel and major decisions over Ryan Van Doren of Embry-Riddle (16-7) and Bernie Vazquez of Elmhurst (12-4) as well as accepting a forfeit against Olivet.

Aaron Cook, Buena Vista University, Waconia, Minn./Waconia
Cook, a junior 157-pounder, won his weight class at the Jim Fox Open Saturday. He posted a 3-0 record and defeated Upper Iowa’s Travis Eggers, the top-ranked wrestler in Division II at 157 pounds, for the title with a 14-5 major decision in the championship match.

Justin Hanson, Wartburg College, Dakota City, Iowa/Humboldt
Hanson, a senior 165-pounder, won the 165-pound title at the Simpson Invitational. Seeded second in the draw, he defeated defending national champion Tyler Burkle of Coe by a 4-3 margin to increase his individual record to 11-0. Hanson’s win over Burkle was a big difference in the Knights’ six-point win over the Kohawks (175-169) for the team title. He also registered a win over Loras’ Joel Allen Dec. 3 as part of the Knights’ 123rd straight dual victory against league competition. (IIAC Men’s Athlete of the Week)

John Helgerson, Wartburg College, West Union, Iowa/North Fayette
Helgerson, a sophomore heavyweight, recorded two falls and a major decision en route to the heavyweight title at the Concordia (Wis.) Open. Seeded third, he posted a 10-5 win over seventh-rated Mark Corsello of Elmhurst in the final.

Aaron Wernimont, Wartburg College, Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area
Wernimont, a senior 157-pounder, was one of only two non-Division I champions at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open. He went 5-0 with a win over NJCAA No. 2 Carrington Banks of Iowa Central Community College to push his personal winning streak to 42 matches stretching back to last year. Tyler Burkle, Coe College, Coggon, Iowa/North-Linn
Burkle, a junior 165-pounder, increased his winning streak to 42 matches, dating back to the 2006-07 season with his 5-0 performance at the Pointer Open Nov. 8. He took the championship with a 4-0 win over Corey Van Groll of UW-Parkside, the No. 7 ranked wrestler at 165 pounds in NCAA Division II. Burkle is now 66-8 in his career.
