Feb. 21, 2010

Josh Terrell, University of Dubuque, Beach Park, Ill./Round Lake
Terrell, a senior 165-pounder, was named the Dick Walker Outstanding Wrestler at the Iowa Conference Wrestling Championships after claiming his second consecutive IIAC title with a 4-1 win over No. 1-ranked Carrington Banks of Wartburg. Terrell is the fourth Dubuque wrestler to win at least two titles and the first to do so since 1968. Seeded third, the No. 4-ranked Terrell opened the tournament with a major decision before edging No. 2-ranked Nick LeClere, 6-3, in the semifinals. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Feb. 14, 2010

Josh Atwell, Central College, Jamaica, Iowa/Perry
Atwell, a sophomore 141-pounder, overcame a 5-0 first-period deficit, to defeat Simpson’s Caleb Brus, 9-5, in overtime Feb. 11. He scored the match-tying takedown with one second remaining in regulation, then scored a takedown and a 2-point nearfall in the first 15 second of overtime. The win helped Central defeat Simpson 27-12 and clinch the program’s first winning record since 2000-01.

Adam Weber, Wartburg College, Gilbertville, Iowa/Don Bosco
Weber, a junior 157-pounder, moved his season record to 23-7 with an 8-6 win over NCAA Division III No. 6 Jason Adams of Augsburg Feb. 4. The victory avenged a previous loss to Adams – a 7-4 result in the finals at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals.

Jan. 31, 2010

Evan Brown, University of Dubuque, Ames, Iowa/Nevada
Brown, a senior 174-pounder, pinned Loras’ Matt Dickman in 5:57 Jan. 28 to push his record to 23-2 overall and 13-0 against Division III wrestlers this season. The win over Dickman was his fourth consecutive by way of pin-fall.

Jan. 24, 2010

Tommy Van Renterghem, Central College, Oskaloosa, Iowa/Oskaloosa
Van Renterghem, a sophomore 165-pounder, went 4-0 at the Iowa Conference duals, helping Central snap a 38-match Iowa Conference dual meet losing streak with a 26-15 win over Loras and a 33-10 win over Buena Vista. They were Central’s first league dual wins since Dec. 10, 2004. The win over Loras was the first over the Duhawks since Jan. 28, 1995. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Josh Terrell, University of Dubuque, Beach Park, Ill./Round Lake
Terrell, a senior 165-pounder, helped the No. 22-ranked Spartans upset No. 10-ranked Cornell, 22-20, by throwing Alex Riniker in 38 seconds in the final match of the dual. His overall record improved to 13-4.

Nicholas Loughlin, Cornell College, Cherokee, Iowa/Washington
Loughlin, a sophomore 157-pounder, went 5-0, highlighted with a 3-2 decision over fourth-ranked Zach Mizer of Heidelberg, in leading Cornell to a seventh-place at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Loughlin, ranked seventh at 157 pounds, improved to 22-2 for the season while extending his winning streak to 16 matches. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Jan. 3, 2010

Nick Nothern, Cornell College, Salina, Kan./South
Nothern, a senior 133-pounder, notched his 100th career victory and beat two higher seeds from Wartburg in overtime in claiming the 133-pound title at the Cornell Matman Invitational. He raised his career record to 102-40, becoming the eighth Ram to join the 100-win club.

Dec. 21, 2009

Nick LeClere, Coe College, Coggon, Iowa/North Linn
LeClere, a sophomore 165-pounder, posted three wins by major decision en route to a 4-0 record at the Wartburg Desert Duals. Among the four victories was a 10-6 decision over NCAA Division III top-ranked Mike Morin of Southern Maine. (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Nicholas Loughlin, Cornell College, Cherokee, Iowa/Washington
Loughlin, a sophomore 157-pounder, claimed his first collegiate title by going 5-0 at the Dick Walker Invitational. Ranked No. 7 at 157 pounds in the most recent NWCA individual poll, he improved to 15-2 overall and extended his winning streak to nine matches. At Wartburg, Loughlin threw his first two opponents and added a major decision in the semifinals before prevailing 3-2 (OT; TB1) over Wartburg’s Jacob Groth in the final.

Dec. 6, 2009

Byron Tate, Wartburg College, Clinton, Iowa/Clinton
Tate, a sophomore 197-pounder, went 7-0 during the week to raise his overall record to 14-4. He helped lead No.-6-ranked Wartburg to three dual wins, extending the Knights’ current Iowa Conference dual win streak to 135 and a runner-up finish at the Simpson Invitational. Entering as the fourth seed, Tate was named the Outstanding Wrestler at Simpson after defeating NCAA Division III No. 3 Rob Kramer of Coe and NAIA No. 5 Nic Leither of Northwestern (Iowa) en route to winning his weight class. Earlier in the week, he defeated 2009 NCAA Division III national qualifier Tony Willaert of Saint John’s (Minn.). (IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)

Andrew Roberts, Cornell College, Ackley, Iowa/AGWSR
Roberts, a sophomore 184-pounder, pinned Augustana (Ill.)’s Matt Nykaza in his only match of the week. He moved into the NWCA individual rankings for the first time at No. 10 during the week. Roberts has won five of his last six matches and is 8-6 on the year.

Nov. 22, 2009

Jason Pyle, Luther College, Morrill, Kan./Sabetha
Pyle, a junior 149-pounder, placed second in the Elite Division of the UNO Kaufman/Brand Open. The only D-III wrestler in the 149-pound bracket, he defeated Jared Picket of Indiana (5-3), Colby Robinson of Central Oklahoma (5-4), and Mitch Mueller of Iowa State (9-8), before falling to Nebraska’s Chris Hacker, 8-4 in the final. Robinson, a 2009 NCAA Division II All-American, was ranked seventh nationally, while Mueller, Iowa State’s starting 149-pounder and a three-time national qualifier, was ranked ninth by WIN to open the year. Nov. 15, 2009

John Helgerson, Wartburg College, West Union, Iowa/North Fayette
Helgerson, a junior heavyweight, placed second at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, posting a pair of wins by fall and another by decision over second-seeded Eric Thompson 5-3 in the opener. His lone loss was to NCAA Division I-ranked David Zabriskie of Iowa State in the championship.

Nov. 8, 2009

Mitch Sander, Coe College, Clarence, Iowa/North Cedar
Sander, a senior heavyweight, won the gold division title at the Loras Open Nov. 7. He defeated Eric Bugenhagen (3-1) and Cole Tobin (4-2) from Division I Wisconsin and Christian Brantley (3-2) from Division I Northern Iowa en route to the title. Brantley was the No. 12-ranked heavyweight in Division I.
