DUBUQUE’S PEMSL AND WARTBURG’S GARDNER NAMED  IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BVU’S JONES HONORED AS WEEK’S TOP MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER

MOUNT VERNON, IA . . .  The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period of December 17-30, 2001.  University of Dubuque basketball player Greta Pemsl (Dubuque, IA/Walhert HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Wartburg College wrestler LeRoy Gardner III (Golden Valley, MN/Hopkins HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Pemsl, a senior forward, averaged 22.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in three contests.  She moved into second place on Dubuque’s all-time scoring and rebounding list.  In a victory over Mount St. Clare on December 18, she scored 28 points, grabbed 14 rebounds (five offensive, nine defensive) and blocked seven shots in 29 minutes.  In two games at the University of Wisconsin-Stout Snowflake Jamboree, Pemsl scored 48 points and grabbed 23 rebounds (six offensive, 18 defensive) against UW-Stout and Colorado College.  She was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Gardner, a sophomore heavyweight, won all three matches the University of California-Davis Duals on December 17, including two victories over NCAA Division I wrestlers – a major decision over Portland State’s Eric Mustoe (14-4) and a decision over UC-Davis’ Jason Paul (7-3).  He also pinned Menlo College’s Marcus Randolph at 2:20.  Gardner also finished second in the FILA Junior World Championship Belt Series, announced on December 29.  That honor is based on his performance at the Junior National Greco-Roman Championships held this past summer.

The IIAC also announced on Monday the Players of the Week for the Conference’s three winter sports.  Pemsl and Gardner earned the Award in their respective sports and Buena Vista University’s Adam Jones (Jefferson, IA/Jefferson-Scranton HS) was named the IIAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Jones, a senior swingman, was named Most Valuable Player of the Lutheran Brotherhood Tournament, averaging 21 points and seven rebounds per game.  In a 77-66 victory over host California Lutheran University, he scored 24 points on eight-for-14 shooting from the floor and six-for-seven from the free throw line.  He also grabbed eight rebounds (three offensive, 5 defensive), added two assists and one steal.  In the Championship game against 17th ranked Gettysburg (PA) College, Jones scored 18 points on six-for-15 shooting including four-for-eight from three-point land.  He also grabbed six rebounds (two offensive, four defensive) and had one steal in Buena Vista’s 63-61 victory.
