WARTBURG'S JANSSEN AND LORAS' MURPHY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 15, 2002. Wartburg College cross country runner Jenni Janssen (Tipton, Iowa/Tipton HS) was selected IIAC Female Athlete of the Week and Loras College cross country runner Marcus Murphy (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny HS) was selected IIAC Male Athlete of the Week.

Janssen, a junior, finished fourth in a field of 127 runners at the Luther All-American Invitational. She ran a time of 18:55, finishing 55 seconds behind the winner, Julia Rudd of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Janssen led the #7-ranked Knights to a second place finish in the Invitational, a race that featured four of the top-25 ranked schools in Division III.

Murphy, a junior, finished second in a field of 124 runners at the Luther All-American Invitational. He ran a time of 20:03, finishing 12 second behind the winner, Tom Kreger of Hamline University and 26 seconds ahead of his nearest Conference competitor (Wartburg’s Joe Hughes). Loras finished fifth in the 15-team Meet.

The IIAC also announced the Players of the Week for the Conference’s eight sports in competition during the week. Janssen and Murphy received the honor for women’s and men’s cross country while the following individuals were also honored.

Football: Coe College senior running back Fredrick Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Lamar HS) rushed for 243 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns (13, 1, 33) in Coe’s 50-0 victory over Eureka on Saturday. He also returned one punt for 18 yards while playing just the first half and one drive in the second half.

Golf: Simpson College sophomore Janelle Claiborne (Lake City, Iowa/Southern Cal HS) finished tied for second at the Wartburg Invitational. Claiborne shot a 165 (84-81) to finish tied with teammate Steph Schenfeld (Indianola, Iowa/Indianola HS) in the 77-golfer field. Led by Claiborne and Schenfeld, Simpson won the Wartburg Invitational for the ninth time in 12 years.

Men’s Soccer: Buena Vista University freshman midfielder Scott Janish (Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS) scored two goals on two shots in the Beavers’ 4-1 victory over Coe. Behind his performance, Buena Vista improved to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Conference.

Women’s Soccer: Simpson College sophomore forward Erin Goettl (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored four goals and two assists for 10 points in three games during the week. After being held scoreless in a Storm loss to Graceland, Goettl had two goals and two assists in a 12-0 victory over Mills. She also scored both Simpson goals in a 2-1 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

Tennis: Cornell College senior Lindsey Pfalmer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) posted a 3-1 overall record during the week including a 2-0 record at #1 singles and a 1-1 record at #1 doubles. In singles play, she posted victories over Clarke and Washington (Mo.). With teammate Steph Froehlich, she registered a doubles victory over Clarke but suffered her lone defeat of the week to Washington (Mo.).

Volleyball: Loras College senior outside hitter Shannon Leonard (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa HS) was named Most Valuable Player of the St. Thomas (Minn.) Invitational. In five matches during the week, including a Conference match against Central and four matches at the St. Thomas Invitational, Leonard had 75 kills and hit .469. In 20 games, she had 10 aces, 26 digs and nine blocks (3 solo).
