SIMPSON'S DONNENWERTH NAMED IIAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College football player Mike Donnenwerth (Sheffield, Iowa/SCMT HS) has been named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 17.

Donnenwerth, a junior quarterback/punter, completed 13-of-24 passes for 183 yards and five touchdowns in the Storm’s 45-32 victory over Upper Iowa. He also rushed for one touchdown. In the contest, he set three school records including most touchdown passes in a game, most touchdown passes in a season (22) and most passing yards in a season (2,318). Donnenwerth averaged 35.8 yards on eight punts including a long of 43 yards and pinned Upper Iowa inside its 20-yard line three times.

The IIAC also announced that Wartburg College senior Heath Ropp (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie HS) was named Wrestler of the Week. During the opening tournament of the 2002-03 season, Ropp posted a 5-0 record in the 125-pound weight class at the Harold Nichols Open. He had three decisions, including one in overtime and one fall against four Division I wrestlers and a Division II wrestler.
