CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that
Wartburg College basketball player Nate Schmidt (Cascade,
Iowa/Cascade) and Buena Vista University basketball player Katie
Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) were named IIAC Male and
Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January
16.
Schmidt, a junior center, averaged 20.3 points,
4.7 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.0 steals per game in three contests
during the week. He shot 61.5 percent from the floor (24-of-39)
and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (12-of-14) in victories
over #7-Buena Vista (72-61), Central (76-58) and Coe (68-67). He
scored 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting, had four rebounds, two assists,
two blocks and one steal as the Knights beat Buena Vista for the
first time since 2002-03. Against Central, he scored 20 points on
10-of-14 shooting, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals. Schmidt
scored a career-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting against Coe.
He also had seven rebounds and three blocks in that contest.
Maguire, a junior guard, averaged 22.0 points,
6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in three contests
during the week. She shot 47.5 percent from the floor (19-of-40)
and 79.2 percent from the free throw line (19-of-24) in victories
over Wartburg (84-78), Dubuque (89-54) and Simpson (83-75). She
had nearly identical numbers in the Wartburg and Dubuque games,
scoring 27 points, dishing out six assists and grabbing three rebounds
in both games. Against Wartburg, Maguire had two steals, made of
7-of-17 field goals and 10-of-13 free throws. Against Dubuque, she
had three steals and made 11-of-16 field goals including 5-of-7
three pointers as Beaver coach Janet Berry won her 200th career
game. Maguire scored 12 points, had seven assists, five rebounds
and a steal against Simpson.
The IIAC also announced on Monday its Performers
of the Week in the seven Conference sports in competition. Schmidt
and Maguire received the weekly honor in their respective sports,
while the following individuals were recognized for their weekly
performances.
Men’s Swimming & Diving: Luther
College freshman Bryan Perrott (Northfield, Minn./Northfield)
finished in the top-3 of six events at the Grinnell Invitational,
leading the Norse to a second-place finish. In individual events,
he won the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.56), finished second in the
100-yard butterfly (54.44) and third in the 400-yard individual
medley (4:33.66). Perrott was also a member of the three relay teams
– the winning 800-yard freestyle (7:32.84), runner-up 400-yard medley
relay (3:48.42) and third-place 200-yard medley relay (1:44.01).
Women’s Swimming & Diving: Luther
College freshman Elissa Schmidt (Claremont, Minn./Owatonna)
garnered six top-3 finishes at the Grinnell Invitational, leading
the Norse to a third-place finish. She finished second in two individual
events – 200-yard individual medley (2:18.21) and 100-yard freestyle
(56.04). Schmidt was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle
relay team (3:45.60), runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:43.52),
and third-place 400-yard medley relay team (4:20.04) and 800-yard
freestyle relay team (8:18.52, a school record).
Men’s Track & Field: Simpson
College senior Nick Bowerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead)
won the mile run and was a member of the winning 4x800 relay team
at the Graceland Invitational. He finished the mile in 4:32.27,
winning by nearly 12 seconds (runner-up finished in 4:44.25). Simpson’s
4x800 relay team finished in 8:41.37, winning by four-tenths of
a second.
Women’s Track & Field: Cornell
College senior Lynn Schneider (Nebraska City, Neb./Nebraska
City) won the shot put and finished second in the weight throw at
the Platteville Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Schneider recorded a mark of 40-1.5 in the shot put, winning by
2-2.75, and a mark of 42-4.25 in the weight throw.
Wrestling: Coe College
senior Adam Reid went 6-0 during the week at 174-pounds
including two pins and three major decisions. In a dual against
#21-Augustana (Ill.), he won by major decision over Nate Demus (13-2).
Reid then led Coe to a first-place finish at the North Central (Ill.)
Invitational. He pinned Lawrence’s Joe Austin (4:16) and Rose Hulman’s
Mark Tappendorf (2:45). He won by major decision over Milwaukee
School of Engineering’s Joe Fields (13-0) and University of Chicago’s
Phil Kruzel (15-1), and won by decision over Elmhurst’s Toby Boltz
(6-1).
