BUENA VISTA’S MAGUIRE AND COE’S KILBURG NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) and Coe College basketball player Mike Kilburg (Bellevue, Iowa/Marquette) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 22. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s seven sports in competition during the week.

Women’s Basketball – Katie Maguire, Buena Vista University, Treynor, Iowa/Treynor
Maguire, a senior guard, averaged 24.0 points, 11.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game during the week. She shot 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from the floor, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from behind the three-point arc, and 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the free throw line in victories over Wartburg (91-76) and Dubuque (93-64). She fell one point shy of her career-high as she scored 33 points (on 9-of-17 shooting) against Wartburg to go along with nine assists and six rebounds. Against Dubuque she had a career-high 13 assists to go along with 15 points (on 3-of-14 shooting), six rebounds and two steals.

Men’s Basketball – Mike Kilburg, Coe College, Bellevue, Iowa/Marquette
Kilburg, a junior center, averaged 27.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the week. He shot 66.7 percent (26-of-39) from the floor in a victory over Cornell (89-84) and a loss to Wartburg (73-71). He scored 23 points (on 11-of-17 shooting), had 10 rebounds and an assist against Cornell. In a losing effort, he scored 32 points (on 15-of-22 shooting), had eight rebounds and four assists.

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Hannah Szerlong, Loras College, Milton, Wis./Milton
Szerlong, a freshman, was part of three winning events in Loras’ dual loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater (122-109) including two individual events and a relay. She won the 400-yard individual medley (4:49.26) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.87), swimming season best times in both events. She was also a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay (4:19.49).

Men’s Swimming & Diving – Jamin Foust, Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead
Foust, a senior, was part of three winning events in Loras’ dual victory over previously unbeaten Wisconsin-Whitewater (127.5-111.5). He won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.16), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.14) and was a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:44.82). His 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay times were season bests.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Dana Klemm, Loras College, Gurnee, Ill./Warren
Klemm, a junior, won two events at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Triangular including the shot put with an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying throw of 12.90 meters. She also won the weight throw with a mark of 14.81 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field – Kyle Calvert, Loras College, Pekin, Ill./Pekin
Calvert, a freshman, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault in his first collegiate meet, winning the event at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Triangular with a school-record mark of 4.75 meters.

Wrestling – Jestin Hulegaard, Buena Vista University, Anoka, Minn./Anoka
Hulegaard, a sophomore, went 5-0 during the week with two major decisions and won the 133-pound class at the Northwestern (Iowa) Red Raider Invitational. In a Conference dual meet, he won by major decision over Cornell’s Aaron Bingham, 10-2. At the Red Raider Invitational, Hulegaard won by major decision over Dana’s Sonny Silva (11-3), and by decision over Morningside’s Chris Utesch (6-3), Wartburg’s Jake Helvey (13-9) and Augsburg’s Vanier Jafari (7-0).

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• University of Dubuque sophomore forward Luke Stotmeister (Potosi, Wis./Potosi) averaged 19.0 points and 12.5 rebounds while shooting 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the floor in an overtime loss to Simpson and a victory over Buena Vista. His 18 points and 14 rebounds against Buena Vista led the Spartans to their first win over the Beavers since 1997.

• Wartburg College senior forward Rance Cartmill (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the floor in victories over Buena Vista and Coe. He hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer of the Knights’ 73-71 victory over Coe, handing the Kohawks their first Conference loss of the season and moving the Knights to the top of the Conference standings.

• Wartburg College junior Lucy Joseph (Lake Worth, Fla./Lake Worth) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with her second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the University of South Dakota Invitational. Her time of 9.14 seconds trailed only Division II national qualifier Shelby Eykyn’s 8.98 seconds.

• Loras College sophomore Jay Figgins (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) went 3-0 during the week including a pin of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Mitch Szwet with 19 seconds remaining in the match to give Loras a 23-21 victory. Figgins was trailing 4-0 at the time of his pin.
