RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College basketball
player Anne Straate (Postville, Iowa/Postville)
and University of Dubuque basketball player Tyler Daugherty
(Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue) have been named the IIAC Female and
Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February
12. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week
for each of the Conference’s six sports in competition
during the week.
Women’s
Basketball – Anne Straate, Luther College, Postville,
Iowa/Postville
Straate, a senior forward, averaged 18.3 points,
10.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.7 blocks and 2.3 steals in three
games during the week. She shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from
the floor and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line
in victories over Central (97-72), Cornell (81-55) and Buena
Vista (72-69) as Luther took over sole possession of second
place in the Conference. She scored 17 points (on 7-of-13 shooting),
had nine rebounds, two steals and a block against Central. Against
Cornell, Straate scored 12 points (on 3-of-6 shooting), had
seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists.
She finished the week with a double-double against Buena Vista,
scoring 26 points (on 11-of-14 shooting) to go along with 14
rebounds, five assists, four blocks and a steal.
Men’s
Basketball – Tyler Daugherty, Univ. of Dubuque, Bellevue,
Iowa/Bellevue
Daugherty, a sophomore guard, averaged 24.5 points,
8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals in two games during
the week. He shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor, including
41.7 percent (5-of-12) from behind the 3-point arc, and 82.4
percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line in victories over
Central (83-72) and Cornell (95-85 in overtime). He scored 26
points (on 10-of-19 shooting), had eight rebounds, five assists
and four steals against Central. In the overtime win against
Cornell, Daugherty scored 23 points (on 5-of-12 shooting), had
eight rebounds and five assists.
Men’s
Tennis – Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Nequa
Valley
Yao, a junior, went 4-0 during the week with two
victories at #1 singles and two victories at #3 doubles. He
defeated the #19th-ranked player in the Central Region, Jordan
Schiltz of Wisconsin-Whitewater (6-3, 7-6) and Monmouth (Ill.)’s
Jared Kunkle (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, with partner Jake Michael,
he posted an 8-1 victory over Monmouth and an 8-6 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater,
the 13th-ranked team in the Central Region.
Women’s
Track & Field – Sherri Schenkel, Univ. of Dubuque,
Lehigh Acres, Fla./Dunbar
Schenkel, a freshman, was part of three school
records at the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scots Invitational.
She set the school record with her first-place finish in the
200-meter dash (27.02) and third-place finish in the 55-meter
dash (7.62). She was also a member of the winning sprint medley
relay team (4:29.33) that set the school record.
Men’s
Track & Field – Josh Hauser, Wartburg College, Union,
Iowa/BCL-UW (Conrad)
Hauser, a senior, won the 400-meter dash (49.45)
and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team (3:20.98) at
the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. Both
times were NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Wrestling – Dave Paramski, Cornell College, Libertyville,
Ill./Libertyville
Paramski, a freshman ranked eighth nationally
at 141-pounds, pinned the sixth-ranked Niles Mercer of Coe at
6:48 in the teams’ dual meet tie (19-19).
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
University of Dubuque freshman Jeanriles Metezier (Pompano
Beach, Fla./Coconut Creek) provisionally qualified for the NCAA
Championship in the 55-meter dash with a run of 6.46 seconds
at the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scot Invitational. He was also
a member of the school record-setting 4x200 relay team (1:30.43)
that finished second and was second in the 200-meter dash (22.52).

Loras College senior Andy Stoecken (Bellevue,
Iowa/Bellevue) bettered his NCAA provisional qualifying mark
in the high jump with a mark of 2.07 meters at Buena Vista’s
Dennis Young Classic.

Loras College junior Whitney Calvert (Pekin,
Ill./Pekin) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships
in the pole vault with a winning jump of 3.38 meters at the
Dennis Young Classic.
•
Wartburg College junior Lucy Joseph (Lake Worth,
Fla./Lake Worth) bettered her NCAA provisional qualifying time
in the 55-meter hurdles, winning the event at the Wisconsin-Whitewater
Warhawk Classic in a time of 8.43. She also finished second
in the 55-meter dash (7.43).
