CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central College baseball
player Shea Stamp (Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon) and
Wartburg College softball player Amy Daniels (Cedar
Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) have been named the IIAC Male and Female
Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 2.
The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for
each of the Conference’s six sports in competition during
the week.
Baseball
– Shea Stamp, Central College, Lisbon, Iowa/Lisbon
Stamp, a senior outfielder, tied a school record
with seven hits in Central’s doubleheader sweep of Cornell.
He hit .778 (7-for-9) with a triple, home run, four RBI and
four runs scored. In the opener, Stamp went 2-for-3 in a 4-0
Dutch win. In the nightcap, a 15-14 11-inning win, he went 5-for-6
with two extra base hits, four RBI and four runs scored.
Softball
– Amy Daniels, Wartburg College, Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar
Falls
Daniels, a freshman third baseman, hit .632 (12-for-19)
and slugged 1.432 in six games during the week. She had three
doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and scored nine runs leading
#7-ranked Wartburg to a 6-0 week. She had four multi-hit games
including a 2-for-2 performance in game two of a doubleheader
against Wisconsin-LaCrosse, a 3-for-3 performance in game two
against Wisconsin-Platteville, and 2-for-4 and 3-for-4 performances
against Coe. Daniels also had four multi-RBI games including
three RBI in game one against LaCrosse and Platteville, two
RBI in game two against Platteville and four in game two against
Coe.
Men’s
Golf – Derek Deminsky, Central College, Rogers, Minn./Elk
River
Deminsky, a sophomore, finished second of 103
golfers at the Loras Duhawk Spring Invitational with a 1-under-par
71. The top finishing Iowa Conference golfer at the tournament
that featured all nine Conference schools, he finished one stroke
behind the Medalist, Brock Ferry of Mount Mercy and led Central
to the team title in the 20-team tournament.
Men’s
Tennis – Nick Cochrane, Central College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort
Dodge
Cochrane, a senior, went 3-1 during the week and
extended his singles win streak to 11 straight matches. At #1
singles, Cochrane, the #25-ranked player in the Central region
defeated the #22-ranked player William Holmes of Carleton (6-4,
2-6, 13-11) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Tim Eisele (6-1,
6-2). Cochrane and partner Ryan Dierks posted a #1-doubles win
over Eau Claire (8-4) but fell to Carleton (8-6).
Men’s
Track & Field – Jeanriles Metezier, Univ. of Dubuque,
Pompano Beach, Fla./Coconut Creek
Metezier, a freshman, won three events, provisionally
qualifying for the NCAA Championships in one at the Coe Kohawk
Open. He was a member of the NCAA qualifying 4x100 relay team
that won the event in a time of 41.59 seconds. He also won the
100-meter (10.97 seconds) and 200-meter (22.00 seconds) dashes.
Women’s
Track & Field – Caroline Capper, Simpson College,
Washington, Iowa/Washington
Capper, a senior, registered three top-3 finishes
and one NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Coe Kohawk Open.
She won and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships
in the hamemr throw with a school-record throw of 50.84 meters.
She also placed second in the shot put (12.13 meters) and third
in the javelin (34.64 meters).
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Buena Vista University senior infielder Derek Fink (Deloit,
Iowa/Denison) hit .625 (5-for-8) with a double, home run, three
RBI and four runs scored in a doubleheader split with Wartburg.
He also made a diving catch at third base in the bottom of the
eighth of game one to preserve a 7-6 Beaver victory.
•
Luther College junior outfielder Christina Gaard (Decorah,
Iowa/Decorah) hit .583 (14-for-24) with two doubles, three RBI
and 11 runs scored in eight games during the week. She led the
Norse to a perfect week with three multi-hit and three-multi-run
scored games.
•
Wartburg College senior Josh Hauser (Union,
Iowa/BCLUW) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships
in the 400-meters (48.3 seconds) and 4x400 relay (3:16,32) at
the Missouri Relays.
•
Wartburg College sophomore Heidi Porter (Manson,
Iowa/Northwest Webster) finished third in the 800-meters at
the Missouri Relays in an NCAA provisional qualifying tie of
2:12.3, three-tenths of a second shy of an automatic qualifying
time.
