CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque
track and field performer Daunta Peterson (Tampa,
Fla./Howard W. Blake) and Wartburg College softball player Cari
Kinzenbaw (Ladora, Iowa/HLV) have been named the IIAC
Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
April 16. The Conference also announced the Performers of the
Week for each of the Conference’s six sports in competition
during the week.
Men’s
Track & Field – Daunta Peterson, University of Dubuque,
Tampa, Fla./Howard W. Blake
Peterson, a senior, qualified for the NCAA Championships
in two events at the Loras Mid-Week Invitational. He was a member
of the winning 4x100 relay team that won the event and automatically
qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 41.11 seconds.
Peterson ran the second leg with a 9.97 split. He finished second
in the 100-meter dash and provisionally qualified with a time
of 10.80 seconds. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash
in a time of 22.29.
Softball
– Cari Kinzenbaw, Wartburg College, Ladora, Iowa/HLV
Kinzenbaw, a senior short stop, hit .769 (10-for-13)
with four triples, a double, six RBI and eight runs scored in
four games during the week. She slugged 1.462 during the week
and had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit performances
and two two-hit performances. She went 2-for-3 with a double
in a 5-0 win over Loras and went 3-for-4 with two triples, three
RBI and three runs scored in an 11-3 win over Loras. In a doubleheader
sweep of Dubuque, she went 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored
in game one (a 1-0 win) then went 3-for-3 with a triple, three
RBI and four runs scored in game two (an 11-1 win).
Baseball
– Brian Greiner, Wartburg College, Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln
Greiner, a senior catcher, hit .533 (8-for-15)
with a double, triple, home run, six RBI and six runs scored
in four games during the week. He became Wartburg’s career
RBI leader, moving to 171 all-time. In a doubleheader split
with Simpson, Greiner had one hit in each game, scoring a run
in the first game (a 6-3 loss) and driving in a run in the second
game (a 3-2 win). He went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, three
RBI and a run in a 10-6 win in game one of a doubleheader against
Cornell. In the second game, a 26-3 Knight victory, he went
4-for-4 with a triple, four runs scored and two RBI.
Men’s
Golf – Kevin Ault, Wartburg College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort
Dodge
Ault, a senior, tied for second at the 103-golfer
Buena Vista Invitational with a 4-over-par 148 (68-80). His
first round 68 was the tournament’s low round, tied for
Wartburg’s team low round of the season and the second
lowest round of the season in the Conference. He finished one
stroke behind Medalist John Treacy of St. Thomas (Minn.) and
was tied with Nebraska Wesleyan’s Aaron Stockton.
Men’s
Tennis – Nick Cochrane, Central College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort
Dodge
Cochrane, a senior, went 3-1 during the week including
two victories at #1 singles. He defeated Division II Truman
State’s Tyler Wood (6-0, 6-3) and Simpson’s Martin
Zivadinovic (6-1, 6-1). Cochrane and doubles partner Ryan Dierks
split two matches at #1 doubles, an 8-5 win over Simpson and
an 8-2 loss to Truman State.
Women’s
Track & Field – Caroline Capper, Simpson College,
Washington, Iowa/Washington
Capper, a senior, had five top-three finishes,
including three individual titles in two meets during the week.
She won the hammer at the Loras Midweek Invitational (172-5)
and the Cornell Relays (171-11), and won the shot put at Cornell
(42-0). She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships
in the shot put with a third-place finish at Loras (42-4.75),
the third event in which she has PQ’ed this spring (hammer
and javelin). Capper finished second in the javelin (109-2)
at Cornell, eighth in the javelin (106-0) and 11th in the discus
(115-11) at Loras.
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Central College senior catcher Adam Duerfeldt (Urbandale,
Iowa/Urbandale) hit .615 (8-for-13) with a double, three RBI
and four runs scored. He had three multi-hit games including
two three-hit performances during the week.
•
Simpson College senior pitcher Bradi Smith (Lacona,
Iowa/Southeast Warren) went 2-0 with one save, a 0.91 ERA and
26 strikeouts in three games during the week. Smith had complete
game victories over Central and Cornell, striking out 13 and
12 batters respectively. She tied the school record with her
fourth save of the season in the second game of the Central
doubleheader.
