LUTHER'S NARTEY AND DUBUQUE'S MONIGOLD NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

October 10, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College soccer player Wil Nartey (Ghana) and University of Dubuque soccer player Kim Monigold (Freeport, Ill./Freeport Senior) have been named the IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 9. The Conference also announced the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s eight sports in competition during the week.

Men’s Soccer – Wil Nartey, Luther, Ghana
Nartey, a senior forward, scored five goals in two matches including the game winner in both contests. He scored four times in Luther’s 8-0 victory over Coe and scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Buena Vista as the Norse remained undefeated in Conference play.

Women’s Soccer – Kim Monigold, Dubuque, Freeport, Ill./Freeport Senior
Monigold, a junior forward/midfielder, scored all five of Dubuque’s goals during the week as the Spartans defeated Cornell 2-0 and Aurora 3-1.

Men’s Cross Country – Ben Grant, Loras, Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque
Grant, a sophomore, set the course record at the Lamb-Kohawk Invitational hosted by Coe College, finishing the 8,000-meter race in 26:17. He finished 28-seconds ahead of the second-place finisher on the same course the Iowa Conference Championship will be run.

Women’s Cross Country – Jill Wagaman, Wartburg, Dysart, Iowa/Union (LaPorte City)
Wagaman, a junior, won the Dan Huston 4,000-meter race in 14:56, besting the rest of the 151-runner field by three seconds.

Football – Neil Suckow, Coe, Fredericksburg, Iowa/Fredericksburg
Suckow, a sophomore running back/wide receiver, amassed 226 all-purpose yards in Coe’s 45-14 victory over Buena Vista extending the Kohawks win streak to nine straight dating back to last season. He had eight receptions for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, he rushed for 20 yards and two scores on nine carries. Suckow also returned one kickoff for 51 yards.

Women’s Golf – Erin Dohlman, Wartburg, LeRoy, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander
Dohlman, a senior, shot 78-86—164 in the final two rounds of the Conference Championship, two strokes better than the weekend’s next best performer and more than doubled her lead from the first weekend, from seven strokes to a Conference record-tying 15 strokes. She finished the Championship at 314 (77-73-78-86), becoming the first Wartburg golfer to earn Medalist honors and carding the lowest total since the IIAC went to a 72-hole Championship in 2003.

Women’s Tennis – Molly Fiala, Coe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a freshman, went 8-0 during the week, including four victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles highlighted by two singles victories over two-time Conference MVP Marie Schutte of Cornell and Conference titles at #1 singles and #1 doubles. In the final regular season match of the year, Fiala defeated Schutte 7-5, 6-0, in singles and teamed with Rachel Lenoch to defeat Schutte/Pavla Brachova, 8-1, in doubles. At the IIAC Individual Tournament, Fiala defeated Buena Vista Yuvanca Russ (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinals and Central’s Kristin Kovar (6-1, 6-1) in the semifinals before defeating Schutte in the Championship match (6-4, 7-6 (7-2)). In the Tournament doubles, she and Lenoch defeated Russ/Shelli Smith (8-1), Kovar/Jennifer Knobbe (8-3) and in the Championship match, Schutte/Brachova (8-4).

Volleyball – Jessica Martin, Simpson, Toledo, Iowa/South Tama
Martin, a junior middle hitter, averaged 4.52 kills, 1.57 digs, 0.90 blocks and 0.43 aces per game in 21 games during the week as Simpson went 4-1. In a 3-0 Conference victory over Luther she set a school record for highest hitting percentage in a three-game match at .778 (14 kills-0 errors-18 total attacks). She was named to the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle All-Tournament Team after leading Simpson to a 3-1 record. She posted a career high 25 kills in a 3-2 win over Gustavus Adolphus in match in which she hit .463, had 10 digs and five blocks. She had 22 kills and hit .362 to go along with nine digs and seven blocks in a 3-2 win over St. Olaf. She had 13 kills, five digs, three aces and three blocks in a 3-0 win over Macalester. In the Storm’s lone defeat of the week, 3-2 to St. Mary’s (Minn.), Martin had 21 kills, eight digs and three blocks.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• Central sophomore linebacker Andrew Lehn (Packwood, Iowa/Pekin) recorded 19 tackles in a 41-6 victory over Cornell, the most by a Central player since 1997. In the last two games, he has 36 tackles, the most in back-to-back games for a Dutch player since 1994.

• Dubuque junior quarterback Jermar Jackson (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) totaled 285 yards of total offense in a losing effort against Wartburg (29-15). He completed 23-of-37 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 42 yards on 18 carries and had a one-yard reception.

• Simpson senior Jen Wendt (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) won the Lamb-Kohawk Invitational hosted by Coe College in a time of 23:15, besting the rest of the 90-runner field by 36-seconds.

• Central sophomore setter Terri Berger (Sioux City, Iowa/Heelan) averaged 10.70 assists per game in five matches (20 games) during the week. She set career highs in assists in back-to-back matches with 49 against Concordia-Moorhead and then 58 against St. Thomas (Minn.). She also had a 56-assist performance against Carleton.

• Dubuque junior setter Jessica Browning (Red Oak, Iowa/Red Oak) average 10.82 assists per game in five matches (22 games) during the week. She recorded 40 or more assists in four straight matches including 62 against Macalester, 49 against Gustavus Adolphus, 48 against St. Olaf and 40 against St. Mary’s.
