CENTRAL'S SCHURING AND PEDERSON NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

November 7, 2005

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central College football player Vance Schuring (Pella, Iowa/Pella) and Central College volleyball player Katie Pederson (Lake Mills, Iowa/Lake Mills) have been named the IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 6. The Conference also announced the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s six sports in competition during the week.

Football – Vance Schuring, Central College, Pella, Iowa/Pella
Schuring, a sophomore running back, rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in Central’s 37-20 victory over Wartburg. His 175 yards are the most by a Central runner since Marc Ricketts gained 201 yards against Loras in 1998. Schuring became Central’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Rickets in 1998 and currently has 1,113 rushing yards, the seventh-highest single season total in school history.

Volleyball – Katie Pederson, Central College, Lake Mills, Iowa/Lake Mills
Pederson, a senior middle hitter, averaged 3.0 kills and 1.11 blocks per game, and hit .413 during the week as Central posted 3-0 victories over Wartburg, Coe and Simpson. Pederson had 10 kills, a .353 hitting percentage (10 kills-4 errors-17 total attempts) and two blocks in the regular season finale against Wartburg to clinch Central’s 10th straight Conference title. In the IIAC Tournament semifinals against Coe, she had nine kills, hit .467 (9-2-15) and had two blocks. She had eight kills, a .429 hitting percentage (8-2-14) and six blocks in the Championship match against Simpson.

Men’s Soccer – Kevin Burberry, Loras College, Orland Park, Ill./Marist
Burberry, a junior midfielder, scored a goal in each of Loras’ three Iowa Conference Tournament games. His goal in the Championship match against top-seeded Wartburg proved to be the game winner as third-seeded Loras upset the Knights, 4-2, and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. Burberry scored the game-tying goal in the semifinals against #2 Central, 1:07 after the Dutch broke a scoreless tie in the final 10–minutes of the opening half. Loras defeated Central, 2-1 and Buena Vista, 5-2 (in the quarterfinals).

Women’s Soccer – Jenni Wilberding, Loras College, Davenport, Iowa/Assumption
Wilberding, a senior forward, scored three goals and added one assist for seven points in two games of the Iowa Conference Tournament to lead Loras to its fifth straight IIAC Tournament Championship. She scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 3-1 semifinal victory over Simpson. In the Championship match, a 4-0 win over Wartburg, Wilberding scored the Duhawks’ final goal and assisted on the game winner.

Men’s Swimming & Diving – Cody Seil, Loras College, Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge
Seil, a sophomore, won the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle in 51.92 and 1:53.49, respectively in Loras’ dual victory over Coe (118.5-101.5). He was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming a 23.21 split on the second leg.

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Lauren Lehenbauer, Loras College, Davenport, Iowa/Assumption

She also won the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.71) and was a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.59, 27.33 split) in the Duhawks’ dual victory over Coe (122.5-108.5).
