CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The
Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today
that Central College football player Vance Schuring
(Pella, Iowa/Pella) and Central College volleyball
player Katie Pederson (Lake Mills, Iowa/Lake
Mills) have been named the IIAC Male and Female Athletes of
the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 6. The Conference
also announced the Players of the Week for each of the Conference’s
six sports in competition during the week.
Football
– Vance Schuring, Central College, Pella, Iowa/Pella
Schuring, a sophomore running back, rushed for
175 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in Central’s
37-20 victory over Wartburg. His 175 yards are the most by a
Central runner since Marc Ricketts gained 201 yards against
Loras in 1998. Schuring became Central’s first 1,000-yard
rusher since Rickets in 1998 and currently has 1,113 rushing
yards, the seventh-highest single season total in school history.
Volleyball
– Katie Pederson, Central College, Lake Mills, Iowa/Lake
Mills
Pederson, a senior middle hitter, averaged 3.0
kills and 1.11 blocks per game, and hit .413 during the week
as Central posted 3-0 victories over Wartburg, Coe and Simpson.
Pederson had 10 kills, a .353 hitting percentage (10 kills-4
errors-17 total attempts) and two blocks in the regular season
finale against Wartburg to clinch Central’s 10th straight
Conference title. In the IIAC Tournament semifinals against
Coe, she had nine kills, hit .467 (9-2-15) and had two blocks.
She had eight kills, a .429 hitting percentage (8-2-14) and
six blocks in the Championship match against Simpson.
Men’s
Soccer – Kevin Burberry, Loras College, Orland Park, Ill./Marist
Burberry, a junior midfielder, scored a goal in
each of Loras’ three Iowa Conference Tournament games.
His goal in the Championship match against top-seeded Wartburg
proved to be the game winner as third-seeded Loras upset the
Knights, 4-2, and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament
in school history. Burberry scored the game-tying goal in the
semifinals against #2 Central, 1:07 after the Dutch broke a
scoreless tie in the final 10–minutes of the opening half.
Loras defeated Central, 2-1 and Buena Vista, 5-2 (in the quarterfinals).
Women’s
Soccer – Jenni Wilberding, Loras College, Davenport, Iowa/Assumption
Wilberding, a senior forward, scored three goals
and added one assist for seven points in two games of the Iowa
Conference Tournament to lead Loras to its fifth straight IIAC
Tournament Championship. She scored two goals, including the
game-winner in a 3-1 semifinal victory over Simpson. In the
Championship match, a 4-0 win over Wartburg, Wilberding scored
the Duhawks’ final goal and assisted on the game winner.
Men’s
Swimming & Diving – Cody Seil, Loras College, Fort
Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge
Seil, a sophomore, won the 100-yard and 200-yard
freestyle in 51.92 and 1:53.49, respectively in Loras’
dual victory over Coe (118.5-101.5). He was also a member of
the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming a 23.21 split
on the second leg.
Women’s
Swimming & Diving – Lauren Lehenbauer, Loras College,
Davenport, Iowa/Assumption
Lehenbauer, a freshman, set the Loras record in
the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing second in the event in a
time of 10:54.80, nearly 10 seconds better than the old mark.
She also won the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.71) and was a member
of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.59, 27.33
split) in the Duhawks’ dual victory over Coe (122.5-108.5).
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Simpson junior setter Marcie McQuinn (Ankeny,
Iowa/Ankeny) averaged 13.5 assists per game during the Iowa
Conference volleyball Tournament to lead the #6-seeded Storm
to upset victories over #3 Buena Vista (3-0) and #2 Wartburg
(3-1) before falling to #1 Central (3-0) in the Championship
match. McQuinn had 51 assists against Buena Vista, 55 assists
against Wartburg and 29 assists against Central.

Simpson senior forward Angel Salcido (Cd. Juarez,
Mexico/LPI) scored five goals and had two assists for 12 points
in two games of the Iowa Conference Tournament. He had a hand
in all four goals in Simpson’s 4-1 first round victory
over Luther as he scored three times, including the game winner,
and assisted on another. In a losing effort to top-seed Wartburg
in the semifinals, Salcido scored two goals (both on penalty
kicks) and had an assist. With his weekly performance, he became
the Storm’s career leader for goals and points.
