BUENA VISTA’S MAGUIRE AND WARTBURG’S McKRAY NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University basketball player Katie Maguire (Treynor, Iowa/Treynor) and Wartburg College wrestler Zach McKray (Iowa City, Iowa/City) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 4. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week.

Women’s Basketball – Katie Maguire, Buena Vista University, Treynor, Iowa/Treynor
Maguire, a senior guard, averaged 23.3 points, 6.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals in three games during the week. She shot 55.3 percent (21-of-38) from the floor, including 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from behind the three-point arc, and 70.8 percent (17-of-24) from the free throw line in victories over Central (101-69) and Colorado College (85-63) and in a loss to Division II Colorado School of Mines (93-75). Maguire became Buena Vista’s career assist leader against Central as she had seven helpers to go along with 28 points (on 9-of-11 shooting), four rebounds (1-3) and four steals. In a losing effort against Colorado School of Mines, she scored 20 points (on 5-of-15 shooting), had five assists, three rebounds (1-2), and three steals. Maguire finished her week with 22 points (on 7-of-12 shooting), seven rebounds (1-6), seven assists and two steals against Colorado College.

Wrestling – Zach McKray, Wartburg College, Iowa City, Iowa/City
McKray, a freshman, posted a 5-0 record during the week with two falls and won the 133-pound weight class at the Simpson Invitational. He defeated Brandon Young, 17-6, in a dual victory over Loras as Wartburg extended their Conference dual win streak to 97 straight. At the Simpson Invitational, McKray pinned Division II Truman State’s Dave Sielert at 2:30 and Coe’s Brian Clement at 1:30. He also had a major decision over Division II Central Missouri State’s Keaton Baker (11-1) and a 5-2 decision in the championship match over Central Missouri State’s Mike Hansen, the #3-ranked wrestler in Division II.

Men’s Basketball – Ryan Hittenmiller, Simpson College, Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman
Hittenmiller, a junior forward, averaged 22.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in two games during the week. He shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from behind the 3-point arc, and 75.0 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line in an 89-83 overtime victory over Loras and an 83-74 loss to Augustana (Ill.). Hittenmiller scored 23 points (on 6-of-13 shooting), had three rebounds (1-2), three assists, a steal and a block against Loras. In a losing effort against Augustana, he scored 22 points (on 7-of-14 shooting), had two rebounds (0-2), three steals and one assist.

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Elissa Schmidt, Luther College, Claremont, Minn./Owatonna
Schmidt, a sophomore, won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events (56.68 and 2:02.76) and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.57) at the St. Mary’s (Minn.) Invitational. She also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.37) as the Norse won the five-team Invitational by 33.5 points over runner-up St. Thomas (619-585.5).

Men’s Swimming & Diving – John Miller, Luther College, Neenah, Wis./Neenah
Miller, a freshman, won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events (1:05.46 and 2:18.99) and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:45.35) at the St. Mary’s (Minn.) Invitational as the Norse won the five-team Invitational by 330 points over runner-up Hamline (874-544).

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• Wartburg College sophomore forward Elizabeth Campbell (Rockford, Iowa/RRMR) averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.7 assists in three games during the week. She shot 57.7 percent (16-of-28) from the floor including 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from behind the 3-point arc, and 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line in a victory over Mount St. Joseph (80-62) and losses to Luther (78-61) and Webster (76-71).

• Loras College sophomore forward Luke Slater (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) averaged 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games during the week. He shot 75.0 percent (12-of-16) from the floor, including 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from behind the 3-point arc, and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line in an 89-83 overtime loss to Simpson and a 69-60 victory over Aurora.

• Simpson College junior Kellen Delaney (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) placed third in the 157-pound class at the Simpson Invitational. He posted a 6-1 record at the Invitational including two falls, two victories over Division II wrestlers and a 7-1 win over the #7-ranked wrestler in Division III (Augustana’s Mike Kerr).
