DUBUQUE’S DAUGHERTY AND LORAS’ KLEMM NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque basketball player Tyler Daugherty (Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue) and Loras College track and field performer Dana Klemm (Gurnee, Ill./Warren) have been named the IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 21. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s seven sports in competition during the week.

Men’s Basketball – Tyler Daugherty, Univ. of Dubuque, Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue
Daugherty, a junior guard, averaged 31.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game, shot 53.7 percent (22-of-41) from the floor and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free throw line while playing all 80 minutes in two games. He scored 30 points (on 11-of-19 shooting), had six rebounds and five assists in an 84-73 loss to Cornell. In an 88-73 loss to cross-town rival, Loras, Daugherty scored 32 points (on 11-of-22 shooting), had five assists and three rebounds.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Dana Klemm, Loras College, Gurnee, Ill./Warren
Klemm, a senior, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put and weight throw in her first competition of the year at the UW-Platteville Pioneer Open. She won both events with marks of 13.54 meters in the shot and 16.0 meters in the weight throw.

Women’s Basketball – Ashley Katch, Simpson College, Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
Katch, a junior center, averaged 10.5 points, 9.0 blocks and 7.0 rebounds per game, and shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the floor in two games during the week. She posted her third 10-block game of the year in Simpson’s 81-53 win over Coe in which she scored eight points (on 4-of-7 shooting), had seven rebounds and two steals. Katch became the Storm’s career blocks leader (181) with an eight-block performance in an 80-60 win over Cornell. She scored 13 points, had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal to go along with her eight blocks.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field – Brad O’Neil, Coe College, Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft
O’Neil, a junior, broke a 21-year-old school record in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:52.83 at the UW-Platteville Pioneer Open, eclipsing the old mark by three seconds.

Men’s Swimming & Diving – Matt Argotsinger, Coe College, Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lincoln
Argotsinger, a junior, won all three events he entered in a 94-63 dual meet loss to Morningside. He won the 200 individual medley (2:10.51), the 100 butterfly (57.56) and swam a 25.22 second split on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:37.42).

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Gayle Dunlap, Coe College, Iowa City, Iowa/City High
Dunlap, a senior, won all three events she entered in a 120-97 dual victory over Morningside. She won the 50 freestyle (26.00), the 100 freestyle (58.63) and anchored the 200 freestyle relay with a split of 26.74.

Wrestling – Jason Knipp, Wartburg College, Gilbertville, Iowa/Don Bosco
Knipp, a senior, went 2-0 at 165-pounds during the week with a technical fall and a decision over a nationally ranked opponent. He defeated Luther’s Nate Van Dyke, ranked eighth nationally, 3-2, as Wartburg won its 108th consecutive dual against Conference competition. Knipp also recorded a technical fall of UW-Stevens Point’s Josh Ison (22-7, 7:00).
