RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College softball
player Ashley Rogers (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert)
and Wartburg baseball player Jake Shandri (Urbandale,
Iowa/Urbandale) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes
of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 4. The Conference
also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s
three sports in competition during the week.
Softball
– Ashley Rogers, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert
Rogers, a junior first baseman, hit .833 (5-for-6)
with a home run, four RBI and four runs scored in two games.
In Wartburg’s season opening win over St. Benedict (10-1
5-innings), she went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in one.
In the second game of the day, an 8-3 win over Aquinas, she
went 3-for-3 with a 3-run home run, a walk and two runs scored.
Trailing 3-1 at the time, her home run sparked a five-run fourth-inning
rally for the Knights.
Baseball
– Jake Shandri, Wartburg College, Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
Shandri, a senior first baseman, hit .643 (9-for-14)
with six doubles, seven RBI, five runs scored and a 1.071 slugging
percentage in Wartburg’s first four games of the season.
He went 3-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s
(Minn.) including 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored
in the opener, a 16-1 Wartburg win. In a doubleheader sweep
of Wabash, he went 6-for-7 with five doubles, three RBI and
three runs scored. In the opener (10-2), he was 1-for-2 with
an RBI and run scored. In the nightcap, he went 5-for-5 with
four doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Men’s
Tennis – Jared Feddersen, Central College, Fort Dodge,
Iowa/Fort Dodge
Feddersen, a junior, went 4-0 during the week
with a pair of wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles against Conference
opponents. Feddersen defeated Simpson’s Matt Johnson (6-4,
6-1) and Wartburg’s Mitch Eslick (6-3, 6-3) in singles
play. In doubles, he partnered with Luke Boyd to post an 8-5
win over Johnson/Tim Claussen and a 9-8 win over Eslick/Tom
Koenen.
