WARTBURG’S HARTWIG AND COE’S BOYSE NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College softball player Angela Hartwig (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott) and Coe College baseball player Lee Boyse (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 11. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s three sports in competition during the week.

Softball – Angela Hartwig, Wartburg College, Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott
Hartwig, a sophomore pitcher, was 5-0 with a 0.28 earned run average and 42 strikeouts while surrendering just nine hits and walking five in 25 innings during the week. In a 9-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead, she struck out ten batters and allowed two hits in six innings. She surrendered just one unearned run and one hit while striking out six in three innings of a 13-1 win over Wisconsin Lutheran. Hartwig recorded her second 10-strikeout performance of the week in a 10-1, five inning victory over Peru State in which she allowed her only earned run of the week and three hits. She posted her second complete game of the week in a 5-2 win over Lebanon Valley, striking out seven and allowing two hits and two unearned runs. She wrapped up the week with a nine-strikeout, one-hit, four-inning performance in a 10-0 win over LaRoche.

Baseball – Lee Boyse, Coe College, Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett
Boyse, a junior pitcher, went 2-0 with a 0.69 earned run average and 11 strikeouts in two games during the week. He pitched six innings in Coe’s 13-1 win over Clark (Mass.), striking out four and allowing one run and four hits. Boyse threw a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over #8-ranked Carthage. He struck out seven batters in seven innings and did not walk a batter.

Men’s Tennis – Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley
Yao, a junior, went 7-1 during the week including 3-1 at #1 singles and 4-0 at #3 doubles. In singles action, he defeated Division II players Wojciech Bartoski of St. Cloud State (0-6, 6-4, 7-5) and Doug Kim of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (6-2, 6-1). Yao also defeated Salve Regina’s Robbie Norton (6-0, 6-1). His lone loss of the week, a 6-4, 6-2 set-back, was at the hands Adam Sandusky of Division II Grand Valley State. Yao teamed with Greg Janssen to post #3 doubles victories over St. Cloud State (8-5), Grand Valley State (8-4), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (8-2) and Salve Regina (8-0).

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• University of Dubuque junior infielder Amanda Schultz (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville) hit .424 (14-for-33) in 10 games during the week. She had four multi-hit games including a 3-for-4 performance against Alfred. She also had a 2-for-3, five RBI performance against Alverno. During the week, she hit two home runs, drove in 12 runs, had eight stolen bases and scored seven runs.

• Loras College sophomore outfielder Adam Gross (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) hit .476 (10-for-21) in five games during the week. He had four multi-hit games including a 3-for-5 performance against Westfield State in which he had two triples, four RBI and scored two runs. Overall for the week, he had a home run, three triples, three doubles, 10 RBI and scored six runs.
