CENTRAL’S SWINGEN AND MEYER NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

March 19, 2007

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Central College softball player Megan Swingen (Woden, Iowa/Woden-Crystal Lake) and Central golfer Brett Meyer (Mendota, Ill./Mendota Township) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 18. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s four sports in competition during the week.

Softball – Megan Swingen, Central College, Woden, Iowa/Woden-Crystal Lake
Swingen, a sophomore pitcher, went 3-0 during the week with one save, a 0.58 ERA and 15 strikeouts in five games (four starts). She allowed five runs (two earned) and 22 hits in 24.1 innings. She started, and won, games against Concordia, Wis. (9-0), Springfield (5-2) and Smith (8-0). Against Concordia, she pitched four innings of three-hit ball and struck out one. She pitched five innings, allowed two runs (both earned) and six hits while striking out four against Springfield. Swingen finished the week with a six-inning, three-hit, complete game against Smith, striking out five. She started and had a no-decision in Central’s 1-0, 8-inning loss to then #1-ranked Ithaca, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out four. In her lone relief appearance of the week, in a 6-4 win over Anderson, she pitched three innings, allowed three hits and struck out one to earn the save.

Men’s Golf – Brett Meyer, Central College, Mendota, Ill./Mendota Township
Meyer, a senior, shot a 1-over-par 73 at the Dutch Desert Shootout in Laveen, Ariz. and won the tie-breaker for Medalist honors in a field that included Division II schools Grand Canyon State (ranked #21 nationally) and Wisconsin-Parkside.

Baseball – Tad Barry, Cornell College, Charles City, Iowa/Charles City
Barry, a junior outfielder/pitcher, threw a complete game, three-hit shutout, striking out four in a 6-0 win over Eureka in the opener of a doubleheader. Offensively for the week, he hit .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in four games. He had matching 1-for-3 performances in the sweep of Eureka (6-0/7-0), scoring a run in both contests and driving in one in the first game. He followed that up with a pair of two hit games in a split with Bethany Lutheran (8-2/3-10), with a double and a run scored in each contest. He had a stolen base in the opener and an RBI in the nightcap.

Men’s Tennis – Ryan Yao, Coe College, Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley
Yao, a senior, was 2-0 during the week with victories at #1 singles and #3 doubles. He defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Alex Lowe (3-6, 6-3, 6-0) in singles play, and teamed with Greg Janssen to defeat Whitewater’s David Stefanik/Johnny Reed (8-4) in doubles play.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• Wartburg College sophomore designated player Ashlie Imming (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) hit .500 (3-for-6) and slugged 1.833 with a triple, two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of William Penn.

• Buena Vista University senior pitcher Ryan Dupic (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) struck out six batters in eight innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run in 6-3 win over Hamline. Offensively in that contest, he was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
