RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College softball
player Ellie Schultz (Clayton, Iowa/Clayton
Ridge) and Wartburg College baseball player Aaron Saeugling
(Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) have been named the IIAC Female
and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
April 15. The Conference also announced the Performers of the
Week for each of the Conference’s six sports in competition
during the week.
Softball
– Ellie Schultz, Coe College, Clayton, Iowa/Clayton Ridge
Schultz, a sophomore pitcher, started all eight
games for Coe during the week, posting a 6-2 record with a 1.02
ERA and 38 strikeouts in 41.1 innings with four shutouts including
a perfect game against the University of Dubuque. In the first
game of the twin-bill with the Spartans, Schultz struck out
10 batters while facing the minimum of 21 in a 4-0 Kohawk victory.
She followed that performance with a four scoreless innings
in game two, striking out five and allowing three hits. Prior
to the Dubuque doubleheader, Schultz handed Luther just its
second loss of the season (2-0), throwing seven innings of two-hit,
five-strikeout ball. She also recorded a pair of wins over Loras,
pitching three innings in a 12-3 win and a complete game, three-hit
shutout with eight strikeouts a 1-0 Coe win. Schultz recorded
her sixth win of the week in a complete game, four-hit shutout
over Wartburg (4-0), in which she struck out four and allowed
four hits. He two defeats during the week were in second games
of doubleheaders with Luther (8-3) and Wartburg (2-1).
Baseball
– Aaron Saeugling, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert
Saeugling, a junior pitcher/infielder, hit .538
(7-for-13) with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and five runs
scored in four games during the week. He had three multi-hit
games including a 3-for-5, four run scored performance in a
12-6 win over Buena Vista in which he had a double and drove
in a run. He also had a pair of 2-for-3 performances –
in a 3-1 loss to Simpson and a 5-2 loss to Buena Vista. Against
Simpson he had a double and a triple as well as a run scored.
On the mound, he went 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 13 strikeouts
in 13 innings. He threw a four-hit complete game in a 5-1 win
over Simpson in which he struck out six. Saeugling received
a no decision in a 3-1 win over Buena Vista, throwing six innings
of shutout ball, striking out seven and allowing six hits.
Men’s
Golf – Jeff Millet, Central College, Newton, Iowa/Newton
Millet, a senior, finished tied for second at
the 128-golfer Buena Vista University Invitational with a 2-under-par
142, three strokes behind the Medalist. Millet’s first
round 69 was tied for the Tournament’s low round and led
Central to a second-place finish in the 24-team field behind
#11-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan.
Men’s
Tennis – Dan Glinert, Loras College, Madison, Wis./Edgewood
Glinert, a freshman, posted a 6-2 record during
the week with matching 3-1 marks at #1 singles and #1 doubles
to lead Loras to their first three wins of the season. In singles,
Glinert defeated St. Ambrose’s Kyle Wood (6-3, 6-1), Knox’s
Jared Katchen (6-1, 6-3) and Dominican, Ill.’s Manny Chavez
(6-0, 6-1). Glinert teamed with Joe Holguin to post doubles
wins over Knox (8-5), Dominican (8-2) and Cornell (8-1). His
two defeats during the week came against Elmhurst, in singles
to Anthony McPherson (6-3, 7-6) and in doubles to McPherson/Greg
Bayer (8-4).
Women’s
Track & Field – KeAnna Martin, Buena Vista Univ.,
St. Louis, Mo./Gateway Inst. of Tech.
Martin, a junior, was the top Division III finisher
in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at Drake University’s
Jim Duncan Invitational, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA
Championships in the 200 while narrowly missing a PQ in the
100. She finished third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.94
seconds, breaking a nine-year old school record. Her 12.34 second
finish in the 100-meters was seventh in the 46-runner field
and 1/100th of a second shy of the NCAA qualifying mark. Martin
was also a member of the 10th-place finishing 4x100 relay team
(51.25 seconds).
Men’s
Track & Field – Jason Fisher, Central College, Montezuma,
Iowa/Montezuma
Fisher, a junior, provisionally qualified for
the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.15
meters, the top mark in Division III to date, to win the event
at Drake University’s Jim Duncan Invitational. His throw
broke the Central school record by seven feet and eclipsed his
previous personal best by 10 feet. He also finished third in
the shot put (14.17 meters) and discus (44.87 meters).
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Luther College sophomore pitcher Nate Todd (Fort
Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) threw a pair of seven-inning complete
games during the week allowing just one earned run in 14 innings
(0.64 ERA) and striking out seven batters in wins over Cornell
and Loras.
•
Central College junior catcher Kelly Harris (LeClaire,
Iowa/Pleasant Valley) hit .556 (10-for-18) with two doubles,
a home run, six RBI and six runs scored in six games during
the week. She also picked off her seventh base runner of the
season.
•
Loras College freshman pitcher Katie Earleywine (Brodhead,
Wis./Blackhawk Technology) went 3-1 with a save and a 0.90 ERA
in six games during the week. She struck out 40 batters and
allowed just 21 hits in 31 innings.
•
Luther College junior catcher Tami Magner (Waukon,
Iowa/Waukon) hit .545 (6-for-11) with two home runs, seven RBI
and three runs scored in four games during the week. She was
4-for-5 with five RBI in Luther’s sweep of #10-ranked
Simpson.
•
Central College senior Alicia Whisner (Adel,
Iowa/ADM) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships
in the javelin with her winning throw of 45.52 meters at Drake
University’s Jim Duncan Invitational. She also provisionally
qualified for the shot put with a mark of 12.88 meters, good
for a third-place finish. Whisner also competed in the hammer
(41.78 meters) and discus (32.93 meters).
