CEDAR
RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University
golfer Jennifer Stork (Lidderdale, Iowa/Kuemper)
and Loras College cross country runner Ben Grant
(Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque) have been named the IIAC Male
and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
October 8. The Conference also announced the Performers of the
Week for each of the Conference’s eight sports in competition
during the week.
Women’s
Golf – Jennifer Stork, Buena Vista University, Lidderdale,
Iowa/Kuemper
Stork, a senior, shot a 77-78-155 over the final
two rounds of the Iowa Conference Championship to earn Medalist
and Player of the Year honors. She posted two of the Tournaments
three final weekend sub-80 rounds and finished with an IIAC
72-hole Championship record 306 (75-76-77-78) to win by nine
strokes.
Men’s
Cross Country – Ben Grant, Loras College, Peosta, Iowa/Western
Dubuque
Grant, a junior, won the NCAA Pre-Regional Meet
hosted by St. Olaf College finishing the 8,000-meter course
in 26:13, besting the 109-runner field by one second.
Women’s
Cross Country – Mary Bridget Corken, Loras College, Dubuque,
Iowa/Wahlert
Corken, a sophomore, finished fifth at the NCAA
Pre-Regional Meet hosted by St. Olaf College finishing the 6,000-meter
course in 23:47, 11 seconds behind the winner of the 115-runner
field.
Football
– Chris Kemmerer, Buena Vista University, Clear Lake,
Iowa/Clear Lake
Kemmerer, a senior place kicker/punter, connected
on all three field goal attempts in Buena Vista’s 15-14
victory over Simpson, including a 34-yarder to win the game
with 41 seconds remaining. He also averaged 42.9 yards on nine
punts including a career-long 74-yard punt, and also averaged
62.5 yards on four kickoffs with three touchbacks.
Women’s
Soccer – Jenny McArdle, Coe College, Sioux City, Iowa/West
McArdle, a junior forward/midfielder, scored all
three Coe goals during the week. She scored twice on five shots
in a 2-1 win over Central, and once on five shots in a 1-0 win
over Buena Vista.
Men’s
Soccer – Nicholas Cookston, University of Dubuque, Lincoln,
Neb./Lincoln Luther
Cookston, a sophomore forward, scored four goals
including two game winners in a pair of identical games during
the week. In Dubuque’s 3-2 win over Cornell and 3-0 win
over #9-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville, he scored two goals on
five shots and connected on a penalty kick in each game. He
is now a perfect 6-of-6 on penalty kicks this season.
Women’s
Tennis – Cornell College #1 Doubles Team of Pavla Brachova
(Ames, Iowa/Ames) & Emily Loewen (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence
Free)
Brachova, a sophomore, and Loewen, a senior, went
unbeaten in four matches against Conference opponents during
the week and finished the season 6-0 against IIAC foes. They
posted matching 8-4 victories over two of the Conference’s
top teams, Coe (Molly Fiala/Hillary Allen) and Luther (Annalise
Conaway/Taylor Cochrane), then added an 8-1 win over Wartburg
(Amanda Barkema/Jodie Pearson) and an 8-2 win over Loras (Jen
Phelan/Anita Saeger).
Volleyball
– Kristy Upah, Coe College, Toledo, Iowa/South Tama
Upah, a junior setter, averaged 12.5 assists in five
matches during the week and was named Most Valuable Player of
the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle at Coe. She set a school record
for assists in a three-game match with her 49 against Macalester.
Other
Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
•
Luther College sophomore Janet Dobyns (Iowa
City, Iowa/West) finished second of 196 runners in the Wartburg
Dan Huston Invitational 4,000-meter race. Her time of 14:25
was just four seconds behind the winner.
•
Wartburg College sophomore Brian Chenoweth (Geneseo,
Ill./Geneseo) finished second of 90 runners in the Wartburg
Dan Huston Invitational 8,000-meter race. His time of 26:10
was just six seconds behind the winner.
•
Central College junior linebacker Andrew Lehn (Packwood,
Iowa/Pekin) recorded 18 tackles, had a half tackle for loss
and forced a fumble in a 19-13 overtime win at Luther.
•
Coe College sophomore Molly Fiala (Cedar Rapids,
Iowa/Jefferson) went 3-1 during the week including #1 singles
victories over Cornell’s Pavla Brachova (6-0, 6-3) and
Luther’s Annalise Conaway (6-2, 6-2).
•
University of Dubuque junior middle blocker Jena Goedken
(Lamont, Iowa/Starmount) hit .437 and averaged 5.38
kills, 1.69 blocks and 1.50 digs per game in five matches during
the week, and was named to the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle All-Tournament
Team.
