SIMPSON’S CURRAN AND BUENA VISTA’S STEWART NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College soccer player Ashley Curran (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and Buena Vista University football player Devin Stewart (Laurens, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon) have been named the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 22. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s four sports in competition during the week.

Women’s Soccer – Ashley Curran, Simpson College, Omaha, Neb./Millard West
Curran, a senior forward, finished the week with three goals and three assists for nine points in two games. She recorded her sixth career hat trick in a 4-0 victory over Central, including the game winner. In a 9-0 win over Coe, Curran registered three assists, one shy of the school record.

Football – Devin Stewart, Buena Vista University, Laurens, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon
Stewart, a junior wide receiver, had three receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns in Buena Vista’s 20-10 victory over Loras. He scored on catches of 44 and 68-yards in the first half. He entered Saturday’s game with 142 receiving yards on the season.

Men’s Soccer – Clint Schreiber, Central College, South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North
Schreiber, a sophomore midfielder, scored Central’s lone goal in a pair of 1-0 victories during the week over St. Thomas (Minn.) and Concordia-Moorhead.

Volleyball – Kate Sievers, Loras College, Miles, Iowa/East Central
Sievers, a senior outside hitter, hit .298 while averaging 5.08 kills and 1.46 digs per game in six matches during the week. In a 3-2 Conference win over Buena Vista, she had a school-record 34 kills, nine digs and three blocks, while hitting .296. In a pair of losses to nationally ranked Wisconsin-Platteville and St. Thomas (Minn.) she had 14 and 19 kills, respectively. Sievers hit .315 with 20 kills, 10 service aces, five digs and four blocks in a 3-2 win over Dubuque. She had her best hitting performance of the week in a 3-0 win over St. Mary’s (Minn.), hitting .475 with 20 kills and five digs. She finished the week with a 15-kill, seven-dig performance in a 3-1 win over Clarke in which she hit .268.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• Central College junior quarterback Tim Connell (Eldora, Iowa/Eldora-New Providence) completed 12-of-18 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns in Central’s 34-7 victory over Cornell. He also rushed for 42 yards on eight carries.

• Coe College senior running back Ashton Northern (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) rushed for 166 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries in a losing effort against Wartburg (10-7). It was his sixth 100-plus yard rushing game on the season, third straight.
