WARTBURG’S BORCHERS AND SIMPSON’S WHITON NAMED IIAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

November 20, 2006

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College wrestler Brian Borchers (Holstein, Iowa/Galva-Holstein) and Simpson College basketball player Katelyn Whiton (Panora, Iowa/Perry) have been named the IIAC Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, November 19. The Conference also announced the Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s five sports in competition during the week.

Wrestling – Brian Borchers, Wartburg College, Holstein, Iowa/Galva-Holstein
Borchers, a senior, won the Gold Division heavyweight title at the Augsburg-Brute-Adidas Open pinning all three opponents in under four minutes. He pinned Augsburg’s Evan Osterhoudt at 1:38, UW-Eau Claire’s Justin McAuly at 3:59 and, in the Championship match, Augsburg’s Andrew Witzel at 1:52.

Women’s Basketball – Katelyn Whiton, Simpson College, Panora, Iowa/Perry
Whiton, a junior forward, was named Most Valuable Player of the Rockford College Tip-Off Tournament after averaging 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in two games. She scored 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting, had six rebounds and four steals in Simpson’s 103-64 victory over Maryville (Mo.). In the Championship game, a 74-59 win over St. Norbert, Whiton scored 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go along with four rebounds and four steals.

Men’s Basketball – Jason Parkinson, Simpson College, Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon
Parkinson, a senior guard, became the 16th Simpson men’s basketball player to surpass the 1,000 career point plateau with his career-high 31-point performance in the Storm’s 82-71 victory over Elmhurst. He shot 50 percent from the floor overall (10-of-20) and on 3-pointers (5-of-10), and also added two rebounds and two assists.

Men’s Swimming & Diving – Andrew Bross, Luther College, Omaha, Neb./Northwest
Bross, a junior, won both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly at the St. John’s (Minn.) Invitational leading Luther to 114 point victory over the host (1003.5-889.5). Bross finished his two events in 53.32 seconds and 2:00.66.

Women’s Swimming & Diving – Elissa Schmidt, Luther College, Claremont, Minn./Owatonna
Schmidt, a junior, won three freestyle events at the St. John’s (Minn.) Invitational. She won the 50-yard free in 25.92 seconds, the 100-yard free in 55.32 seconds and the 200-yard free in 1:59.45.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performances from the past week.

• Central College senior center Clint Driftmier (Clarinda, Iowa/South Page) scored 24 points (on 11-of-14 shooting), had nine rebounds and two blocks in an overtime loss to Bethany Lutheran (96-92).

• University of Dubuque junior guard Tyler Daugherty (Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue) averaged 24.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.0 steals in two games during the week. He shot 55.6 percent from the floor (15-of-27) in a win over Cal Tech and loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

• Central College sophomore forward Emily DeJong (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) scored 15 points, had eight rebounds, two steals and two assists as the Dutch upset 10th-ranked Washington (Mo.), 80-69. In two games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament, she averaged 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the floor including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) on 3-pointers.

• Luther College sophomore forward Blair Ernst (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) averaged 15.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, shooting 57.9 percent (11-of-19) in victories over Nebraska Wesleyan and Grand View at the Luther Tip-Off Tournament.
