WARTBURG’S SAEUGLING NAMED PITCHER OF THE YEAR; WARTBURG’S MARTIJN NAMED POSITION PLAYER OF THE YEAR; WARTBURG’S HOLST NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College senior pitcher Aaron Saeugling (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) has been named the 2007 IIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Year, Wartburg junior outfielder Jerrold Martijn (Calbas, Aruba/Kirkwood C.C.) has been named the 2008 IIAC Baseball Position Player of the Year and Wartburg head coach Joel Holst has been named the 2008 IIAC Baseball Coach of the Year.

Saeugling enters the NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 record, a 1.83 earned-run average, and 32 strikeouts in nine appearances overall. He led the Iowa Conference in ERA and was second in opponents’ batting average (.212). In six Conference appearances, he posted a 3-0 record, a 2.22 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings. He led the league in ERA and ranked fifth in opponent’s batting average (.233).

He was also one of Wartburg’s offensive leaders, ranking second on the team with a .366 batting average (48-for-131) with three home runs, 12 doubles, a .542 slugging percentage and team-highs with 31 RBI and eight stolen bases. Saeugling ranked 10th in the IIAC in batting average, sixth in doubles, seventh in slugging percentage, and 10th in RBI.

Martijn enters the NCAA Tournament with a .395 average (51-for-129), six home runs, 26 RBI, 12 doubles and 37 runs scored in 37 games. He ranked led the Iowa Conference in total bases (87) and ranked second in home runs and slugging percentage (.674), fourth in batting average, on-base percentage (.470), and runs scored, sixth in hits (51) and doubles.

In 20 Conference games, he hit .435 (30-of-69) with three home runs, 17 RBI, nine doubles, 22 runs scored and 52 total bases. He led the Iowa Conference in batting average, slugging percentage (.754), on-base percentage (.518), runs scored, Martijn also ranked second in doubles, home runs and total bases, third in triples (2), and fifth in hits.

He also ranked as one of Wartburg’s most effective pitchers, posting a 4-3 record with a 3.19 ERA, two saves, and 40 strikeouts in 10 appearances. He ranked third in opponents’ batting average (.224) and eighth in ERA. In five IIAC appearances, Martijn posted a 2-0 record with a 2.53 ERA and two saves, tied for the league lead in saves and ranking fourth in ERA and opponents’ batting average (.233). He pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with eight strikeouts in the second championship game of the IIAC Tournament to lead the Knights into the NCAA Tournament.

Holst guided Wartburg to its 12th consecutive IIAC baseball title (18th overall) and ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Knights enter the NCAA Tournament with a 26-13 record and are the fifth seed in the Regional Tournament. Wartburg finished Conference play with a 17-3 record and proceeded to go 3-1 in the IIAC Tournament to win its first IIAC Tournament since 2005 and the league’s automatic berth into the national field.

The IIAC also announced today the 2008 baseball All-Conference Team. The 32-member Team includes nine repeat All-Conference performers including Coe College senior Cody Smith, who receives All-Conference accolades for the fourth time, and Central College senior Brett Mahan and Luther College junior Adam Kohls, who have been honored for the third time. IIAC regular season and tournament champion Wartburg and third-place finisher each had an IIAC-best six All-Conference performers, with five Kohawks landing on the First Team. Regular season runner-up Simpson five All-Conference selections, while Loras College had four.
