RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Simpson College women's
basketball player Katelyn Whiton (Panora, Iowa/Perry)
and University of Dubuque men's basketball player Tyler
Daugherty (Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue) have been named
the IIAC Female and Male Athletes of the Week for the period
ending Sunday, January 27. The Conference also announced the
Performers of the Week for each of the Conference’s seven
sports in competition during the week.
Women’s
Basketball – Katelyn Whiton, Simpson College, Panora,
Iowa/Perry
Whiton, a senior forward, averaged 19.3 points
and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 65.0 percent from the field
as the Storm picked up a trio of league wins. In an 81-66 win
at Loras Saturday, Whiton broke the Simpson record for career
field goal attempts (1,129). Her 27 points in the same game
were the most scored by a Storm player since Whiton scored 33
against California Lutheran Dec. 28, 2004. (IIAC

Men's
Basketball – Tyler Daugherty, University of Dubuque, Bellevue,
Iowa/Bellevue
Daugherty, a senior guard, averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 rebounds,
and 3.7 assists per game in three games last week. The Spartans
posted a 2-1 record to improve to third place in the IIAC after
starting 0-3 in the league. Daugherty opened the week with 27
points on 10-of-20 shooting in a 92-90 overtime win over at
Cornell Monday, then followed it up with 23 points and 10 rebounds
in a home win over Wartburg. He closed out the week with 12
points and six rebounds in a 64-45 loss to Buena Vista.
(IIAC Male Athlete of the Week)
Wrestling
– Luke Satern, Buena Vista University, Humboldt, Iowa/Humboldt
Satern, a sophomore 141-pounder, helped the Beavers go 4-0 at
Saturday’s IIAC Duals by recording four pins including
a fall over Luther’s Travis Grawin, who came in ranked
10th. The sophomore also split a pair of matches in duals Tuesday
with Morningside and Northwestern (Iowa). Satern improves to
13-3 on the season with nine pins.
Men's
Indoor Track and Field – Kyle Calvert, Loras College,
Pekin, Ill./Pekin
Calvert, a junior, provisionally qualified for
the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships
with a second-place effort in the pole vault at Saturday’s
UW-Whitewater Invitational. Calvert cleared 4.72m (15-5 ¾).
It was his first competition of the year.
Women's
Indoor Track and Field – Liz Ulferts, Loras College, Anamosa,
Iowa/Anamosa
Ulferts, a sophomore, provisionally qualified
for the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships
with a second-place effort in the weight throw at Saturday’s
UW-Whitewater Invitational. Ulferts heaved her implement 15.55m
(51-0 ¼) and also took 15th in the shot put (10.65m/34-11
¼). It was her first competition of the year.
Men's
Swimming and Diving – Cameron Webb, Luther College, Carroll,
Iowa/Carroll
Webb, a junior, helped set three Norse pool records
and one school record in Luther’s 207-93 victory over
Grinnell College. Individually, he set a school record and a
pool record in the 100 freestyle (:47.30) and a pool record
in the 200 freestyle (1:44.08). He also swam the third leg on
the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:26.26) that set a pool record.
Women's Swimming and Diving – Elissa Schmidt, Luther College,
Claremont, Minn./Owatonna
Schmidt, a senior, was part of three Luther pool
records during Luther’s 197.5-102.5 victory over Grinnell
Saturday. She placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:56.50 –
pool record), 100 freestyle (:54.12 – pool record), 100
butterfly (1:01.87), and swam the first leg of the 200 freestyle
relay that placed first with a pool-record time of 1:42.91.
Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
Men's
Basketball – Buena Vista University junior guard
Andre Wagner (Omaha, Neb./Northwest) was a
key component in BVU’s 76-70 come-from-behind victory
Wednesday at Simpson, scoring a game-high 21 points, including
four three-pointers. Wagner followed up that effort with a game-high
14 points in the Beavers’ 64-45 win over Dubuque Saturday.
Buena Vista is currently on a nine-game winning streak –
its longest since winning 12 straight towards the end of the
2004-05 season.
Men’s
Basketball – Central College senior guard Zak
Clark (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmond) averaged 19.5 points
and shot 68.8 percent from three point range as the Dutch posted
wins over Simpson (76-67) and Wartburg (75-68). During the week,
Clark broke the school’s career three-point goals record
(now has 161) and became the 25th member of Central’s
1,000-point club (currently 23rd with 1,018 points).
Men’s
Basketball – Coe College senior forward
Kyle Kuenstling (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) moved into
second place on Coe’s career scoring list with 13 points
in a 52-44 loss Saturday at Luther. He now has 1,364 career
points. He also recorded his third double-double of the season
in the same game, closing with 10 rebounds.
Women’s
Basketball – University of Dubuque sophomore
forward Jennifer Nichols (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock)
averaged 22.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in three games last week,
highlighted by a 20-point, 7-rebound effort that in a 58-52
win over Wartburg Wednesday that gave the Spartans just their
10th win overall over the Knights and their first-ever regular-season
sweep.
Women’s
Basketball – Wartburg College senior guard Elizabeth
Campbell (Rockford, Iowa/Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock)
set Wartburg’s single-game three-point field goal record
in the Knights’ 83-67 win over Central Jan. 26, hitting
on seven of nine attempts. She also recorded her 10th double-double
of her career as her 12 boards aided a single-game school record
60-rebound effort for Wartburg.
Wrestling
– Loras College sophomore 157-pounder Erik Hanson
(Lansing, Ill.) posted four wins, including two major decisions
and two wins over wrestlers ranked ahead of him at the IIAC
Duals at Luther College. Hanson, ranked ninth by the NWCA at
157, posted wins over both #4 Joey Verschoor of Buena Vista
(3-2) and #5 Pat McAuley of Cornell (5-3).
Men’s
Swimming and Diving – Coe College senior Matt
Argotsinger (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Abraham Lincoln)
won five events and finished second twice in the final two home
duals of his career. In a 158-46 dual loss to Grinnell Jan.
25, Argotsinger swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:33.73)
and took second in both the 200 IM (2:06.94) and the 100 butterfly
(:58.06). Against Monmouth Jan. 26, he won the 200 freestyle
(1:53.59), the 200 backstroke (2:07.15), the 200 IM (2:10.54),
and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:34.80).
Women’s
Swimming and Diving – Coe College junior Colleen
Fowler (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) won all four
diving competitions in duals over the weekend against Grinnell
and Monmouth. Fowler posted scores of 245.55 and 223.25 on the
1-meter board and 259.70 and 260.70 on the 3-meter board, tying
the school record on the 3-meter board against Monmouth (260.70).
