CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College softball
player BreAnn VanDeer (Webster City, Iowa/Webster
City) and Wartburg College men’s golfer Ian Flores
(Dysart, Iowa/Union Community) have been named the IIAC Female
and Male Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday,
April 13. The Conference also announced the Performers of the
Week for each of the Conference’s five sports in competition
during the week.
Softball
– BreAnn VanDeer, Luther College, Webster City, Iowa/Webster
City
VanDeer, a junior pitcher, pitched two complete-game
wins during the week. She threw a four-hit shutout against Dubuque
April 9, striking out 12 while allowing only four hits. Against
Buena Vista on April 13, she picked up a save in game one then
allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in the second
game. She raised her record to 7-2 overall while seeing her
ERA fall to 1.19. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week)
Men’s
Golf – Ian Flores, Wartburg College, Dysart, Iowa/Union
Community
Flores, a junior, placed third in the medalist
hunt at the Wartburg Spring Invitational. He carded a first-round
72 to share the 18-hole lead and followed it up with a 77 to
finish with a 5-over-par 149, ten strokes off the lead. Flores,
the highest finishing IIAC golfer at the meet, led the host
Knights to a fourth-place finish (308-317=625).

Men's
Tennis – Tim Eisele, Luther College, Lakeville, Minn./Apple
Valley
Eisele, a senior, went 2-0 in singles and paired
with Harrison Whiteley to post a 1-1 record in doubles as Luther
defeated Macalester 7-2 and lost at No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus
8-1. Eisele posted the only win in the dual with the Gusties,
defeating Ben Tomasek at No. 5 singles 4-6 6-3, 1-0 (3).
Men’s
Outdoor Track & Field – Jeanriles Metezier, Univ.
of Dubuque, Pompano Beach, Fla./Coconut Creek
Metezier, a junior, placed in the top-four in
three events at the Nike Impact Sports/UW-Platteville Invitational.
He was part of the winning 4x100 relay (42.18), was runner-up
in the 100 (11.14), and was a member of the fourth-place 4x400
meter relay (3:27.49), in which he ran a 50.70 split.
Baseball – Jason McClaflin, Simpson College,
Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk
McClaflin, a senior first baseman/third baseman,
hit .533 with six RBI, three doubles, and a run scored as Simpson
split four IIAC games. He picked up five hits against Loras
April 13, including a 3-for-4 performance in the second game.
McClaflin also made only two errors in 43 chances in the field.
Other Outstanding Weekly Performers
The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding
athletic performances from the past week.
Softball
- Wartburg College senior first baseman Ashley
Rogers (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) posted team highs in
batting average (.667) and hits (8) and was tied for the team
lead in runs scored (5) and doubles (2) as the No. 12 Knights
picked up four league wins to extend their winning streak to
12 games. She was perfect in 28 chances in the field and recorded
three consecutive multiple-hit games to end the week and was
6-of-10 against Loras.
Men’s
Outdoor Track & Field – Loras College junior
Kyle Calvert (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) was the top
collegiate performer in the men’s pole vault at the Nike
Impact Sports/UW-Platteville Invitational. He moved to third
nationally in the event after clearing an automatic-qualifying
height of 16 feet, 6 ½ inches.
Baseball
– Cornell College junior utility player/pitcher
Casey Korn (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) fired
a complete-game seven-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 3-2 game
2 win over Dubuque on April 13. He allowed two unearned runs
and did not issue a walk. In the first game of the doubleheader,
Korn was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored as
the Rams posted an 8-6 victory.
Baseball
– Coe College senior pitcher Lee Boyse
(Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) was 1-0 in two starts on the week.
He gave up just two hits while not allowing a run in two innings
of work against the University of Iowa on April 9. In the second
game of a doubleheader against Buena Vista, Boyse threw five
innings of two-hit baseball, allowing just a single run and
striking out three.
